Responsible dog ownership scheme boosted by donation

People in Suffolk who take their pooches out and about on their dog collar and lead may be please to hear that a scheme promoting responsible ownership has had a funding boost.

The Dog Watch scheme was given £284 from Waitrose shoppers, who put the programme forward for a community award at the Sudbury store. It also received £100 from tea dances held at the town's Delphi Club, reports the Suffolk Free Press.

At present, there are 54 Dog Watch wardens who carry with them free bio-degradable bags, given to owners so they can clean up after their pooch.

The scheme has also placed five red dog litter bins around Sudbury following complaints of dog fouling.

Bradley Smith, Sudbury's community warden, told the news provider: "We are constantly listening to what the public tell us and we are in the process of making some alterations to the dog litter bins to make the gap at the top wider."

It has been an offence not to clear up after your dog in public areas since 1996.
