It may be worth spoiling a cat with pet toys and treats on Monday (January 16th) as its purring can help to ease the stress of Blue Monday.
Blue Monday is thought to be the most depressing day of the year because of the cold weather, bills and failed New Year resolutions.
However, Cats Protection says that a cat’s purr helps to elevate the mood following research by the Mental Health Foundation that shows owning a cat can help people be happier.
Beth Skillings, Cats Protection’s clinical veterinary officer, said: "Sitting with a relaxed purring cat at the end of a hectic day is a soothing massage for the soul.
"Perhaps this is because the reassuring hum is generally associated with calmness and gentle communication, or perhaps it is because the frequency of the vibration is in the range that can stimulate healing."
The charity added that curling up with a cat helps to lower the blood pressure as well, so helps stressed-out owners to relax.
