Description

Protexin Pro-Fibre is a specially formulated dietary supplement rich in digestible fibre and probiotics. The product is highly palatable and is suitable for dogs, cats, rabbits and other small animals and is designed to help support normal digestive function, while maintaining a sufficient level of fibre in the body.

Now more concentrated, a 500g pot will last approximately the same length of time as an 800g pot making it an ideal product for long term use.

Product Information

Profibre is a pelleted product for addition to the daily food of dogs & cats.

Containing fibre from several sources. Many modern dog or cat foods and methods of feeding often leave the dog or cat with insufficient fibre in its diet which may lead to alimentary problems, especially in the hind gut. It is suggested in some cases that impaction of the anal glands may be the result of insufficient dietary fibre.

The beneficial microorganisms contained in this product occur naturally in the gut of all healthy animals. Probiotics colonise the gut and help exclude potentially pathogenic bacteria. The fibre content of Pro-Fibre is multi-sourced and comprises both digestible and indigestible components. Higher fibre diets produce an increase in stool diameter which is important in triggering the emptying of the analsacs during defaecation.

Pellet Contents

Pro-Fibre is a palatable pellet containing:

  • Multi-source fibre
High levels of both soluble and insoluble fibre with new fibre sources including psyllium and sugar beet pulp. Pro-Fibre now has higher levels of dietary fibre (45%) to help bulk the stools out.
  • Probiotics
The EU-registered probiotic Enterococcus faecium (NCIMB 10415) E1707, to help repopulate the intestine with beneficial micro-organisms.
  • Preplex prebiotics
A prebiotic, consisting of fructo-oligosaccharide (FOS) and acacia (Gum arabic), to feed and stimulate the growth of beneficial bacteria.
  • Artificial beef flavouring
    To improve palatability and compliance.

Given daily, Pro-Fibre can help to promote efficient digestion and avoid the problems associated with insufficient dietary fibre.

I have been giving this to my dog daily for about 3 weeks and it has made a difference to his ‘scooting’ on the floor. I have also stopped giving him wet food. This product was recommended by my Vet.

Does what I was advised it would. Purina HA is good for my dog but made him constipated. This has balanced out his movements.

Daily dose?

Elaine

My dog is 25kg what is the daily dose for him please?

  • VioVet Staff

For a dog between 20-35kg you will need to give 2 measures (20g)

Megacolin and Constipation

Carla Clark

Is this product useful in cases of megacolon/ constipation? Will the additional fibre not block them up?

  • VioVet Staff

Fibre helps nornalise stool production. This can lead to firmer stools so it is worth discussing this with your vet to ensure it is safe. If they have advised use of the product though then it is suitable.

Grain allergy

Jayne Dursley

  • VioVet customer since 2019
  • From: South Yorkshire, United Kingdom

My dog has a grain allergy, would the Protexin Advanced be a better option than the Protexin pro fibre.
Thanks

  • VioVet Staff

Pro-Fibre contains wheat derivatives, so would not be suitable in your dog. Pro-Fibre Advanced is made in a wheat-free formulation, though it is of note that it does contain oat feed and maize, so it would depend on your dog’s specific allergies as to whether it would be appropriate.

Two doses

Shelley

Can I give the daily dose twice in a day on any one day, not as a regular thing. My dog is just getting over loose stools but not quite there yet. I wondered if giving a double dose today only would help things along a bit quicker.

  • VioVet Staff

It is not advised to feed higher than the recommend daily dosing. If the stools are still loose after 7 to 10 days of treatment then it is advised to contact your vet for further advice. If scavenging related or due to a dietary indiscretion then it should resolve within this period on a gut supplement like this. If long term use is needed this it is recommended to chat to your vet to rule out underlying causes first.

Grain Free?

Simon D

My dog has real problems with grain in her diet. It causes many flare ups of GI pain and discomfort. Would this be classified as “grain” as it contains wheat and would it likely cause issues?

  • VioVet Staff

This product contains Wheat Feed which is grain based. If you are looking for a grain free probiotic then we recommend ReguTum Gastrointestinal Powder as this is grain free.

Diarrhoea

Anita

Our Yorkshire terrier was recommended this product by our vet now since we started using it his been suffering with diarrhoea and vomiting can this be the product causing it as he was ok before

  • VioVet Staff

This product is intended to help support the guts and resolve issues like vomiting/diarrhoea. It is a supplement so does not have any listed side effects, however if your dog is intolerant to one of the ingredients within it then it could cause the signs you describe. I strongly advise you see your vet who advised you to use the product. It should not be causing the signs you are seeing.

8 months old cat who has constipation & scooting her bottom on the carpet. is it suitable for her?

Marcello Tomasini

  • VioVet customer since 2020
  • From: Kent, United Kingdom

I have 8 months old cat who has constipation, suffering cat flu & also she always scooting her bottom on the carpet. I'm sure that she haven't worms and fleas as de-worming on schedule. Due to she has constipation & car flu, so she've been taken "Purina Pro Plan Fortiflora" & "Flumax", seems improving a bit. However, she still scooting her bottom on the carpet & varies poo daily.

Can she have it with those supplement together? is it helps to stop her scooting?? thanks

  • VioVet Staff

If your cat is prone to constipation then I would avoid giving Protexin Pro-Fibre. The increased fibre it provides is great for loose stools but it will firm the constipated stools even further which may not be beneficial.
There can be many possible causes to scooting, including anal gland issues. I recommend discussing the problem with your vet so they can diagnose the underlying issue. If the anal glands are diagnosed as the underlying cause and there is no constipation present then Protexin Pro-Fibre can help to treat the issue.

Morning or Evening meal

Karen

Hi just received a tub of pro fibre after being recommended it by our vet to help with our Bulldogs anal glands. Daft question but do you suggest adding it to his morning meal or evening? Or does it not matter? Thank you.

  • VioVet Staff

Those dose can be given morning or evening or split between both meals, whatever is preferred. The only requirement is you need to make sure the entire daily dose is given within one 24 hour period.

Protexin for rabbits

Ky

  • VioVet customer since 2017
  • From: Singapore, Singapore

When is the expiry date and how frequent do i feed this to my rabbit please?

  • VioVet Staff

Unfortunately we cannot advise on specific expiries, but we guarantee the expiry date will be greater than 6 months from time of ordering.
This product should only need to be given if your rabbit has intestinal upsets, such as diarrhoea, or if advised by your vet. It can also be used in the long term to prevent intestinal problems.

Protexin pro fibre

Nicola Bailey

  • VioVet customer since 2018
  • From: Leicestershire, United Kingdom

I normally buy the 500g tub for my dogs. But can I buy the 800g tub for them, as this says for rabbits on and no mention of for dogs on the front of the tub - thanks

  • VioVet Staff

Hi Nicola,

The 500g is formulated especially for dogs, and contains an approved probiotic strain of bacteria to support their digestive health. The 800g Rabbit version contains a different probiotic is not approved for use in dogs - it's not an 800g version of the same product.

Protexin Pro-Fibre can be quite expensive, so we made sure we worked on our own version to help save customers money on their pet care. ReguTum Fibre Care is a powder rather than pellets, and is very similar to Pro-Fibre with high levels of fibre, pre and probiotics, but we have also included Bentonite Clay which is a binding agent, additionally helping to firm stools and also soothes the gut lining.

Each scoop is 10g, so the 500g pot contains 50 servings. It is likely to last the same amount of time as Pro-Fibre, but costs a couple of pounds less per pot.

I hope this is helpful!
