Q & A

Below are some recent questions we've received regarding Droncit Tapewormer Tablets for Cats and Dogs, including answers from our team.

6 April 2020 at 10:49am

I just wanted to check on the dosage. It says 1 tablet per 10kg. Does that mean I give one or two tablets to a 14.3kg dog?

  • VioVet Staff

Hi Jenny,

The tablets have a divide line so they can be broken in half. Your 14.3kg dog will need 1.5 tablets to ensure they receive an effective dose.

Hope this is helpful.

Kind regards,

Presciption required?

Hi, is a prescription from my vet required to purchase Droncit?

  • VioVet Staff

Thank you for your question.

You do not need a prescription for Droncit.

Droncit Wormer for cats

Janet Harris

  • VioVet customer since 2017
  • From: Pen-y-bont ar Ogwr, United Kingdom

Will this product treat roundworm as well as tapeworm?

  • VioVet Staff

This product is effective only against tapeworm. Drontal is effective against both roundworm and tapeworm though.

How often

Samantha Knox

  • VioVet customer since 2017
  • From: Tyne and Wear, United Kingdom

How often do you worm the cat with droncit spot on please

  • VioVet Staff

For most cats once every 3 months should be sufficient. However if they are hunters and catch lots of mice etc then application once a month is advised.

Scalibor collar and other treatments

Justine Rogers

  • VioVet customer since 2016
  • From: Matera, Italy

My dog lives in Italy where there is leishmaniasis and a Scalibor collar is imperative. Although it should alleviate fleas, I initially need another effective one-time treatment. What other flea treatment is safe alongside Scalibor. Also a wormer... is Droncit ok...a lot of strong treatments! What would you suggest?

  • VioVet Staff

Droncit is just for tapeworms. Drontal Plus is a multi-wormer which is effective against tapeworms and round worms too. This is safe to use with all the other products you are talking about using. If you want to give a one-off treatment for fleas, then you can use a spot-on product like Frontline or Advantage, or give a tablet such as Capstar.

Treating for tapeworms

VioVet Visitor

My dog has advocate as he will not take worming tablets. Iv crushed them, hidden them in cheese, wrapped them in meat, and he still knows they are there and refuses to take them. Im concerned about tape worm and thought about droncite spot on but cant find anything for a 20k dog

  • VioVet Staff

Droncit (or any other brand of the drug praziquantel) is perfect for treating tapeworms in a dog which is also receiving Advocate. However there are no spot-on forms of this drug for use in dogs, they are just for cats. Dogs can be given tablets (which is extremely difficult for you) or can be given an injection by your vet. I do not think you have any other choice, apart from not treating for tapeworms at all. Usually in dogs you know if your dog has a tapeworm because segments of worm are seen near the anus. If you do not see these, then your dog is almost certainly clear of them. Diligent flea control (they can carry tapeworms), avoiding feeding fresh offal and not allowing scavenge of wild animal carcasses will normally control tapeworms anyway.

Can I administer to a 9wk old kitten? How much of tablet? How often?

  • VioVet Staff

This tablet treats just tapeworms, it is not a general multi-wormer. It is very unusual for a 9 week old kitten to get tapeworms, so I wonder if you have the correct tablet. You might intend to give Drontal which has a similar name but is the usual multi-wormer. If you do indeed need to give Droncit, the dose is one tablet per 10kg bodyweight. You would have to weight the kitten and see how much it weighs. It would then be a matter of dividing up the tablet as needed, though it might be quite tricky to do. One eighth of a tablet would be the correct dose for 1.25kg which might be about the weight of your kitten.

If you want to give Drontal then there is a liquid which is easier to give in smaller doses. Otherwise the dose for the cat tablets is one tablet per 4kg, or a quarter tablet per kg.

Salivating cat

Iv applied the droncit spot on,is it normal 4 the cat 2 dribble lots

  • VioVet Staff

If your cat has managed to lick the application site soon after application, this can cause excessive salivation but this should stop within a few hours. The product is bitter tasting but not harmful despite causing dribbling and shouldn't need treatment. For future applications, it might be worth trying to apply it while your cat is asleep or distracted with a meal, to give the product time to dry. If you have more than one cat, prevent them from grooming each other until the area has dried.

If your cat is still dribbling after a few hours and you are concerned, you should get in touch with your vet.

Advocate and Droncit

Hi, I gave my adult cat Advocate 3 days ago. I have just discovered she has tapeworms. Is it ok for me to give Droncit now or do I need to leave a time-gap? Thanks in advance!

  • VioVet Staff

It is perfectly OK to give these two treatments at the same time, or at different times. They work independently of each other and do not react adversely if given at or near the same time.

Droncit tablets and effipro flea and tick drops

VioVet Visitor

Can I give my 10 month old dog effipro flea and tick drops the same day as I give him droncit tablets?

  • VioVet Staff

Yes this is perfectly OK (but note that Droncit is just for tapeworms. Drontal is also safe to give with Effipro and is a multi-wormer which treats roundworms as well as tapeworms).
