A massive proportion of people in the US invest in either dog food or cat food, or, indeed, both.

One in three (62 per cent) people has a pet, according to The Harris Poll of 2,184 adults, reports IT News Online.

The findings of the survey reveal that 91 per cent consider their pet to be a member of the family, with 33 per cent buying holiday presents for their four-legged friend on a regular basis.

The figures also showed that 57 per cent frequently allow their pet to sleep in bed with them.

In terms of cat and dog popularity, 69 per cent of those surveyed had a dog and 51 per cent had a cat.

These findings show certain correlations between US owners and people in the UK.

Recent research by ICM revealed that a quarter of dog owners in the UK let their pooch sleep in the same bed as them.
