Meet the pets – getting on with animals may be as important as parents

Thursday, 22nd November 2012

A new study has revealed a quarter of girls would think about dumping their man if their pet didn’t like him, bringing a new level to the frightening 'meet the parents' scenario.

Next date night men may want to consider buying dog chew toys or some nice cat food rather than the traditional flowers and wine combination, because there is a lot riding on the line if her pet takes a disliking to you.

A new study, carried out by an animal health organisation, revealed that women are particularly devoted to their animals, with 40 per cent of the 1,094 pet owners surveyed saying they would risk their own life to save their animal if it were in danger.

One in five animal lovers regularly chat to their animals about the weather and 60 per cent revealed they celebrate special occasions together, such as birthdays and even Valentine's, mother's and father's days.

NOAH Chief Executive Philip Sketchley said: "The vast majority of pet owners agree being a responsible pet owner means caring for your pet, feeding it, exercising it and giving it attention.

"While we wouldn't advocate heroics that could put their own lives at risk, it's important people ensure they're fully informed on how to look after animals."
