Cat food will be required by those running ten Downing Street as it has been revealed that the prime minister and his family are to adopt a pet cat.

Larry, a tabby tomcat from Battersea Dogs and Cats Home, was chosen by Downing Street staff and David Cameron's children after the property experienced a problem with rats, reports the Daily Mail.

A source close to Mr Cameron revealed that the family are excited to be getting Larry.

They told the news provider: "The whole family really loves cats. They have had two cats in the past and would love to have one in number ten."

Larry is thought to be between three and five years old and Kirsty Walker, Head of Cats for the charity, said she believed he is a good match for the priminesterial family.

She is quoted as saying: "Larry is a great match, because he is a very sociable cat who enjoys attention and loves human contact."
