It's devastating when a pet goes missing because, as most owners would testify, they are a much loved member of the family.

With Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Month underway in the US, a website dedicated to reuniting lost pets with their owners has offered up its top tips on how to help lost pets return home.

MissingCritters.com advises that every new pet is kitted out with an ID tag and microchip as it will increase their chances of returning to their family were they to get lost.

If a pet does go missing it's vital that owners start searching around the house and local area immediately. Advertisements will also increase the chances of a pet being found.

Moreover, owners should visit their local shelters and physically inspect the animals housed there.

MissingCritters.com noted that quick and meticulous action will help owners improve their chances of finding their animal companion.
