Description

Specific (Dechra) Struvite Management is a complete food for adult dogs, specially developed to help prevent and dissolve struvite uroliths, whilst enhancing the condition of the coat (tackling problems of hair loss, dry skin or coat dullness). The food is also developed to promote a low urine PH (below 6.4), acting to dissolve existing struvite crystals and prevent the formation of new ones through its low-level phosphorous and magnesium content. The inclusion of omega -3 fatty acids (EPA & DHA) will further promote the health of skin, joints and coat for a healthier looking dog. Highly digestible and palatable to suit even the most selective appetites.

Benefits

  • Dissolution & reduced recurrence of struvite - The diet has a reduced content of magnesium and phosphorus (components of struvite crystals) for dissolution and reduction of recurrence struvite crystals and stones
  • Urine pH control - A urine pH below 6.4 dissolves existing struvite crystals and minimises the risk of precipitation of new struvite crystals
  • High digestible - High quality and highly digestible ingredients ensure a maximum uptake of nutrients from the diet, whilst reducing faecal output
  • Joint, skin & coat support - EPA and DHA are both omega-3 fatty acids with a beneficial effect on the maintenance of healthy joints, skin and coats

The food is a good composition. It's small, so ideal for small dogs, it feels slightly moist, not really dry like some kibble. But unfortunately, my dog just will not try it. Having said that, she's an extremely fussy dog. I'm disappointed that she wouldn't try it because it is good value.

Q & A

How long can one feed Struvite Management Dry Dog Food?

JMB

Our dog had a lot of systene stones and we have been feeding him this food for nearly six months. The small print on the packet implies that this should not be fed for more than six months. His latest scan last week showed that all but possibly one remaining stone have disappeared so we are very pleased. He is a three yo standard dachshund and I understand that this breed has a tendency to cystene crystals. In spite of what it says on the packet, can I continue to feed him this food in order to prevent new crystals forming? If not, please could you suggest a maintenance food?

Any use of the diet beyond the packaging guidelines should only be done alongside veterinary advice. Unfortunately we cannot provide off label advice regarding the products we stock. If your vet is unsure whether this is safe then they can contact the manufacturer direct to discuss the best nutritional approach for your pet.

My shih-tzu has bad teeth (due to neglect before I 'rescued' her).

Pamela Johns

My rescued shih-tzu needs this type of food as she had a severe case of gallstones before I brought her home. Now on RC s/o food but appears to be forming some crystals, although not developed into stones. Still having little control over her bladder although she does try to let me know when she needs to go out. Would this food be better for her, or would it not make any difference please?

  • VioVet Staff

There are a few types of urinary diets and each are very specific for certain types of stones. I recommend discussing this with your vet as they will know what type of stone needs to be prevented. Using the wrong urinary diet can actually worsen the problem so it is important you do this before changing the diet.
