L-CARNITINE/TAURINE ADDITIVE

29th May 2014
Linda Sparrey

My dog has heart disease and I give him a carnitine/taurine supplement called Carnicare.

My dog is currently fed a food called First Class, but our local pet food supplier has discontinued stocking this and I am thinking of changing him to Royal Canin (he was on this as a puppy).

Would it be safe for me to continue to give him the supplement when these are in the dry food?

John Cousins

L-carnitine and taurine are regarded as safe supplements for dogs and there is no reasonable concern about overdosing them. You could (gradually) switch from your current diet to Royal Canin and continue with the supplement.Whether or not you need the supplement as well is another question. I am not sure that it will be of great benefit, that is difficult to assess, but it will do no harm.
