I have had a rescue dog living with me for the past 6 weeks. She is seriously under weight and severley anemic, to the point that she nearly died and had to have a blood transfusion(3 weeks ago). Blood tests also showed signs of pancreatitis . I now have her on a high protein diet, recommended by the vet and he also gave me a few sachets of FortiFlora as he suspects she may have an immuno problem, where her body has been attacking itself . All I can say is, I put half a sachet on her food each morning(she is about 10kilo) and 3 weeks on her toilet situation is under control and she appears to be gaining weight (although not weighed yet as I want to wait 4 weeks). She was pooing about 10 times a day and very smelly but now that has halved and poo smells normal. I don't know if it is a combination of good food and probiotic but I will continue to give her this supplement. Over the moon !

My boy had a very near fatal illness in January 2018 that needed a 90 min Emergency operation. He has a low immune system and Fortiflora boosts his system. The price of this can be very expensive from the Vets so being able to purchase at a cheaper price is good for my pocket, while stiĺl being a life saver for him.
Highly reccomended

Weight of dog to amount given?

Natasha

My Vet has recommend this for my dog who has been diagnosed with Possible inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and Gastric issues so she's sick often a diet change to Eukanuba Dermatosis FP Veterinary Diets which has helped a lot less sick nearly 2 months clear no sick but the other day was sick Vet Advises I add this once a day my dog gets her food split 3 times in the day as she's a small dog weight about 5kg should i give this on her morning feed or night feed and do you recommend half a Sachet a day on one meal?

  • VioVet Staff

I think your vet's advice is very good. That particular diet is often very effective and this supplement is good too. I would give the Fotiflora just once per day, there is no need to do it more than that. It is usual to give a whole sachet once daily even to small dogs so personally I would do that.

Length of course

How long can this be given to an elderly dog of 15 with loose stools

  • VioVet Staff

This product is usually given on the basis of controlling the presenting symptoms. It is used when the performance of the digestion is questionable, such as when the stools are loose. If the stools improve after using the product, then it is possible to keep using it to maintain the effect, or stop and see if it is no longer needed. Sometimes Fortiflora will have "cured" an underlying problem/imbalance, other times it just tends to tip the balance the way we want while and for as long as it is being given. There is no hard and fast rule on this and luckily there is no harm from stopping and starting dosing. It is safe to use life-long and this is sometimes helpful. Shorter courses, or intermittent courses as required, are equally acceptable. You should provide treatment "to effect".
