Description

PURINA® PROPLAN® VETERINARY DIETS Canine NF Renal Function is a complete veterinary diet for dogs with chronic kidney disease. PPVD NF contains restricted amounts of phosphorus as this mineral can build up in kidney patients and has been shown to contribute to progression of the condition. It also contains limited amounts of high quality protein to help reduce the build-up of toxins, while helping to maintain muscle mass. Omega-3 fatty acids also help maximise the natural anti-inflammatory processes and reduce blood pressure inside the kidney.
Note that PPVD NF is not suitable for dogs that require a high protein/phosphorus diet such as pregnant bitches or growing puppies.

Dietary phosphate restriction to support kidney function, helping to slow down progression of chronic kidney disease.

Restricted but high quality protein to help reduce the build-up of toxins in the body and therefore improve quality of life.

Omega-3 fatty acids help reduce blood pressure in the kidneys and maximises the natural anti-inflammatory process.

Dog seems to enjoy it and is satisfied with his meal. Too early to tell whether it helps his renal problem but it's a good start.

I've ordered from Viovet a number of times and always had prompt deliveries. The NF renal dry dog food seems to be working well for my dog and his condition has improved so very pleased with it.

What is the protein Source please

CJ

Please can you tell me the protein source of this food, my dog has a sensitive tummy to chicken derivatives in dog food and has been stable on James WellBeloved Lamb and Rice for many years but has now been diagnosed with early stage renal failure. I have tried Royal Canin as recommended by our vet but despite a very slow introduction over three months it is still not agreeing with him so I am looking for an alternative affordable renal food. My dog is a Black Labrador, 12.5yrs old with Hypothyroidism from age 2yrs. Apart from this he is extremely healthy. Thank You

The protein sources in the Purina NF diets are as follows:
Dry
Maize*, rice*, dried egg*, dried whey*, digest*, dried beet pulp*
Wet
liver, heart, maize, egg powder, rice, turkey

If your dog has been stable on a lamb and rice diet then it is likely both these protein sources are safe in your dog. I would also check the ingredients of the Royal Canin Renal food you tried (there are multiple different versions) and rule out the protein sources in that.

Assuming the Royal Canin diet did not contain egg /maize/whey then you should be safe to feed this Purina NF dry diet. I would avoid the Wet version unless you have to feed this as this also contains poultry protein (turkey) which may cause a similar reaction to chicken.
All the above advice is assuming your dog had a food reaction to the Royal Canin diet. The diarrhoea could have been coincidental and I would rule out other causes with your vet first.

Renal Dog Food

Lisa

Hi, I have a 12 yr old Border Collie who suffered a bout of Pancreatitis over 7 years ago. Following a routine blood test (for Dental work) it was discovered that his kidney function is at the high end of normal (ie not failing.) The vet has suggested I put him on a renal food but these appear to be high in fat which is what I want to avoid. Would your food be suitable for him? He weighs 19 KG. Any suggestions would be welcome. Thank you. Lisa

With two separate clinical conditions to consider it is always difficult to recommend the right food. For cases like this you should really work through it with your own vet who has a better understanding of your dogs history. Given the known benefits of a renal diet for dogs with reduced kidney function I would agree that challenging your dog with a slightly higher fat renal diet is on balance worth the risk. I would suggest Royal Canin Veterinary Diets Renal Wet Dog food which is lower fat (9%) than most of the other renal foods like Purina which contains 14.5% fat. Over the next month you should monitor closely his gastrointestinal response to the new food.
