Description

Phytopet Tartar-X for Dogs helps to control tartar and freshen breath, just by sprinkling on your dog's normal food. It is made from 100% natural, human-grade ingredients including seaweed fragaria and parsley.

Contains:

Sea Vegetables; Chondrus crispus & Fucus versicuosis:
Studies show that a small daily dose of these sea vegetables can be very effective in helping to safely reduce and prevent dental plaque and tartar in dogs and most other animals, and it’s so easy to use, just sprinkling a little Tartar X powder onto your pets food! So how does it work? These sea vegetables contain a multitude of important trace minerals including Calcium and Magnesium which support healthy teeth and gums. They are also rich in polysaccharides, Chondrus crispus contains a very high percentage of polysaccharides and is an important ingredient in toothpaste. Polysaccharides are known for their mucilaginous, viscous properties which exhibit antibacterial and anti-viral actions. In studies, these polysaccharides have also been shown to inhibit plaque and tartar formation. By creating a thin viscous coating of film on the teeth and gums these sea vegetables help to support a healthy bacterial balance in the mouth. An over growth of bad oral bacteria is one of the major causes of gum disease. The waste product caused by these bacteria is extremely acid causing erosion of the teeth's enamel. The waste from these bacteria can leak through the gums into the blood stream, affecting major organs of the body. Due to the ability of these sea vegetables to inhibit calculi formation, Tartar X may also be useful in preventing urinary calculi and crystals etc.
Another positive action of these sea vegetables is that they are rich in iodine. Iodine is important for skin and coat, and thyroid function, the thyroid helps control the body's metabolism. Iodine also plays an important role in the removal of toxins from the body, and assists the body in utilizing various minerals, like calcium and silicon.

Fragaria: The leaves and roots are used in treatments of Tartar and gum disease. Fragaria is the homeopathic treatment of choice for plaque and tartar control. Traditionally Fragaria was also used to treat the liver, intestinal and stomach disorders.

Peppermint: Well known breath freshener and digestive aid, although, traditionally peppermint was used for dental plaque.

Parsley: Traditional breath freshener with the added benifit of supporting kidney function. Used for windy colic and as a gastric tonic.

Q & A

Below are some recent questions we've received regarding Phytopet Tartar-X for Dogs, including answers from our team.

Is it okay to use with other products, and how much do I use?

Donna

My 2 year old rescue dog, who we've had for 3 months, is currently taking a probiotic/prebiotic powder (permanently) sprinkled on his evening meal, and he has a tablet in each meal to help reduce his anxiety (Dorwest Scullcap & Valerian) (he has 2 meals a day).
He will not let us brush his teeth at all, he won't let us anywhere near his mouth, I have a few questions please.
1. Would this be okay to use with the above two products?
2. How much do I give him a day (he's 9kg)?
3. Do you have to scrape the plaque off or anything or just let the powder get rid of plaque and tartar? - If I do, is there anything else you can suggest to use as he won't let us do this, and he has a sensitive tummy so can't give him dental chews.
Thank you

1. Would this be okay to use with the above two products?
These are herbal products so it is hard to definitely say they will be safe together, as they have not been specifically tested alongside each other. However I cannot see a clash in any of the ingredients within.

2. How much do I give him a day (he's 9kg)?
Unfortunately the manufacturer has not provided us with dose information, however this will be on the packaging itself.

3. Do you have to scrape the plaque off or anything or just let the powder get rid of plaque and tartar? - If I do, is there anything else you can suggest to use as he won't let us do this, and he has a sensitive tummy so can't give him dental chews.
The product works to reduce the build up of plaque and freshen the breath, it will not remove it unfortunately. If there are physical plaque build ups on your pets teeth then it is best to consult a vet to get these removed, then focus on preventative care. You can use dental chews, such as Nylabone, to help your dog break off this plaque themselves if this is not possible. These are inedible but flavoured so should be less likely to set off your pet's sensitive stomach.

Tartar

Julie

Will this product remove tartar that has already formed on my dogs teeth

  • VioVet Staff

If tartar is in the form of visible hard plaques then this product is unlikely to help clear these. It works best to reduce the build up of plaque. I recommend reading our Dental Blog for more information on this topic.

Suitable for bladder stones

Concerned

My dog has had Calcium Oxilate stones removed, still at the moment 6 weeks later got some crystals there. He is on Royal Canin s/o wet and dry. Can he have Phytopet please. Thank you

  • VioVet Staff

If your dog is on a prescription diet for urinary problems, in particular bladder stone issues, then I would avoid varying from this diet as much as possible. Phytopet Tartar-X is a very safe product but it may contain levels of Calcium that are too high for your dog and could counter the prescription diet. I would not give this product to be on the safe side. If you are looking to help prevent tartar build up then I advise brushing your dog's teeth. We have a wide range of dog brushes that would be suitable on our website, just follow this link.

What do you recommend to reduce tarter and plaque from my dogs teeth she has kidney and liver problems and eats hepatic dog food , maybe organic supplements?

  • VioVet Staff

If your dog is on a prescription diet and has kidney/liver problems then I would minimise what you add to this as it can interfere with the diet or worsen these diseases. I would avoid dental supplements in this case, however I would try brushing your dog's teeth. This is the most effective way to clear plaque and prevent build up. I would advise using a tooth brushing kit, here is a link to some on our website.
