Q & A

Below are some recent questions we've received regarding Milbemax Worming Tablets for Dogs & Cats, including answers from our team.

Wormer

Jacqueline Jones

How often do I give my dog a millbe max tablet for worms

  • VioVet Staff

This is a prescription only wormer so you should contact your vet and follow their advice on doseage. In order to protect against clinical lungworm infection it will need to be given monthly. For all other worms it treats then this advice varies depending on the level of risk your dog faces, from dosing every 1 month to every 3 months.

Milbemax

G.hibble

How often should product be given?

  • VioVet Staff

This is a prescription only wormer so you should seek your vet for dosing advice, they will be in the best position to provide advice for your specific pet.
The ingredients within Milbemax are milbemycin and praziquantel. In order to cover lungworm this needs to be given monthly, otherwise every 3 month dosing is usually the standard recommendation for routine worming. If your pet is a known scavenger or around immunocompromised individuals (e.g. the young or elderly) then monthly worming is advised.

Wormers for whippets

Alison Lewis

Looking at the milbemax wormers, the size of dog seems to be small or medium/large. My dogs are whippets which I would think would be classed as small/medium.
Is there a wormer suitable for their size?
Thank you

  • VioVet Staff

This is a prescription only wormer so your vet will need to prescribe a specific doseage for you. The dose according to the datasheet for the medium/large tablets is based on weight, and it is as follows:

Weight Dose
5 – 25 kg 1 tablets
>25 – 50 kg 2 tablets
>50 – 75 kg 3 tablets

Lung worm

Lauren

Is this suitable to use once a month for protecting your dog against lung worm ?

  • VioVet Staff

Yes these tablets contain milbemycin oxime which will prevent against adult lungworm infestation if used monthly.

Milbemax

Sue Chambers

How often should I use Milbemax on my dogs. I’ve read that in adult dogs I only need to treat every three months.
I would be using this as a lungworm preventative.

  • VioVet Staff

If you wish to prevent adult lungworm infestation then you will need to use MIlbemax monthly. This is a prescription only medication so you should chat to your vet for their advice on doseage as they will need to prescribe it to you with a set doseage.

Cat worming

Julie Beck

How often do I give these to my cat, is it once a month?

  • VioVet Staff

This is a prescription only wormer so I advise discussing this with your vet.
To prevent against clinical infection with lungworm then you need to use this product monthly. However this is not really an issue in cats so every 3 months is usually recommended.

Worming puppies

Danni

My 14 week old puppy weighs 10kg, should I get him the wormer for puppies or wormer for dogs over 5kg?
Thanks

  • VioVet Staff

This is a prescription only medication so you should discuss dosing with your prescribing vet, as they may be wanting an off license dose to be used.
The datasheet for this product states that one adult worming tablet should be given to dogs weighing between 5kg and 25kg, regardless of age.

Can Milbemax be given to dogs with MDR1 gene?

LJS

Our Australian Shepherd carries the MDR1 gene. We are using a Sorento collar for flea and ticks. Can we safely give him Milbemax as a wormer? He is 15 months old and weighs 24 kg
Thank you

  • VioVet Staff

The MDR1 gene means your dog is prone to ivermectin and loperamide based products. Milbemax contains milbemcyin oxime and praziquantel so is safe for use in dogs carrying this gene. It is a prescription only product so you will need to get a written prescription from your vet for us to be able to dispense it to you. More information on this can be found here.

Question about purchase

Ian Shutt

Hi, would I be able to purchase these tablets from you. We have an 8 year old Westie/ Shitzo cross. He is not displaying any signs of lungworms but now will not take the Panacur granules with his food. He weighs 10kg.
Thanks
Ian Shutt

  • VioVet Staff

Yes we can supply this product you, it is sensible to prevent against lungworm. Milbemax is a prescription only medication though so you will need a written
prescription from your vet to purchase it with us. More information on
this can be found below:
