45 Kills the fleas

I purchased this as I have an extra large cat and the normal size droplets weren't lasting long enough, he seemed to start itching way before the 4 weeks were up so I thought we should buy the Frontline XL.

15 Not as good as it used to be

This was bought for the 3 cats I have. Before this has been excellent in killing fleas. Applied one day, all fleas gone in a couple of days. This time it has had NO EFFECT. It has been down to perseverance of combing the cats on a daily basis. I spoke to the vets and they have been seeing similar responses to Frontline Plus. I did contact the makers but got a reply , more or less telling me I'm using it wrongly and remember to deflea the house. I've had cats for over 15 years. I think I know how to treat the cats/house with fleas.
I've just bought ADVANTANGE spot on. I can't try it yet for another 2 weeks. Fingers crossed

Q & A

Below are some recent questions we've received regarding FRONTLINE Plus Flea & Tick Treatment Dogs & Cats, including answers from our team.

Water

Ian smith

I have a dog that likes water does the application deteriorate in water

  • VioVet Staff

Yes. FRONTLINE PLUS is water-fast. It is OK to bathe your pet before using FRONTLINE PLUS, but the coat should be completely dry prior to application. In the 48 hours immediately after treatment, do not bath, shampoo or let your dog go swimming.

Does this kill lungworm

Mrs Harrison

  • VioVet customer since 2018
  • From: Derbyshire, United Kingdom

I have read that frontline plus also prents lungworm is that correct?

  • VioVet Staff

Frontline Plus is licensed to protect against fleas, lice and ticks. It does not protect against the most common form of canine lungworm, Angiostrongylus Vasorum. You will need to use a product containing either moxidectin (e.g. spot ons like Advocate) or milbeycin (e.g. tablets like NexGard Spectra or Milbemax). The only products containing these two ingredients are prescription only medications and so we will require a written prescription from your vet to dispense them to you.

MIliary Dermatitis in the cat

Stephanie Fay Wilson-Carey

Hello is Frontline Plus for Cats and Ferrets an effective treatment for Miliary Dermatitis?

  • VioVet Staff

Miliary Dermatitis is clinical sign rather than a diagnosis in itself, a bit like saying your cat has a crusty rash. Allergies are a possible cause of Miliary Dermatitis of which the most common trigger is fleas. Frontline Plus will help to treat fleas and so it may be helpful in your cat. It is important you follow your vet's advice primarily on treating your pet.

Ticks

sandra Mann

are ticks repelled before biting

  • VioVet Staff

Fipronil kills ticks (Dermacentor reticulatus, Dermacentor variabilis, Rhipicephalus sanguineus, Ixodes scapularis, Ixodes ricinus, Haemaphysalis longicornis, Haemaphysalis flava, Haemaphysalis campanulata) and lice within 48 hours post-exposure. Some may die before biting however some may take up to the full 48 hours to die, by which point they will have latched on.

Dosage Question

Nick

If you buy a pack of 3 or 6 do you have to use them all at the same time or 1 dose per month etc?

  • VioVet Staff

It is not advised to use all the pipettes at the same time, you should dose monthly as per the datasheet. This means if you purchase a 3 pack or 6 pack for one pet then it will have enough treatment for 3 or 6 months.

Does this kill red mites

Ann Goodwin

  • VioVet customer since 2013
  • From: East Riding of Yorkshire, United Kingdom

Have a parrot with identified red mite infestation, want to treat German Shepherd dog who is scratching but no actual evidence of infestation is this suitable please

  • VioVet Staff

Frontline Plus is only licensed to treat fleas, lice and ticks in dogs/cats. It is unknown whether it will treat red mites. However this is a bird specific mite and so it should not be able to cause an infestation in your dog. It is good practice to use a preventative flea treatment anyway as prevention is always easier than treatment when it comes to external parasites.

Is this product safe/ advised for puppies? (14 weeks/ whippet)

The product should not be used on puppies less than 8 weeks old and/or weighing less than 2 kg. If your dog is heavier than 2kg then Frontline Plus is perfectly safe.

31 March 2021 at 4:48pm

Does this kill fleas on contact

Vivann

Does Frontline Plus kill fleas and ticks on contact with the treated dog or do they have to bite the dog first?

  • VioVet Staff

Fleas must bite your dog in order to die from the active ingredient within (fipronil). Studies show that fleas die within 48 hours after biting a treated dog. They die by 'excitation' so it is expected to see increased flea activity during this 48 hour period as the fleas are killed.

Ticks

Lesley Bottomley

  • VioVet customer since 2009
  • From: Devon, United Kingdom

My dogs run in Moorland, when its its not nesting time, and pick up ticks, particularly the smaller smoother haired spaniel.
Does this product help prevent ticks?
I know Bravecto does, but wondered if this would be a cost effective alternative

  • VioVet Staff

Yes Frontline Plus is licensed to prevent against ticks if used as per the data sheet. It is dosed more often, monthly, compared to Bravecto which is every 3 months.
