55 A great way to supply extra calcium to expectant and new mums
Verified Purchase

By on 7 July 2022

I've used Sollo-Cal D for many years and strongly believe that it helps prevent eclampsia and expectant and lactating doggy mums. It is a safe way to increase the calcium sensitively without causing puppies to grow out of proportion.

I always give this to a bitch as soon as she whelps, & then once a day until the puppies are weaned. It keeps her calm & healthy.

The most effective Ca supplement (has vit D too) which was a life saver when my girl had not eaten post part for almost 3 days. Vet check showed her Ca levels were exactly right and use of this product was endorsed by my vet.

55 Helping a friend
Verified Purchase

This product was bought for an elderly friend who does not have the internet. I suggested trying VioVet as I buy from them and have always had excellent service. My friend was thrilled to receive the product as no one else seemed to know where to buy it and was easy to use in liquid form. Bella is doing well.

Dosing a litter of pups

Serena Parker

  • VioVet customer since 2018
  • From: Cheshire, United Kingdom

Is this product safe to use in water for an entire litter? If so what dosage would you suggest for a litter of 11 weighing roughly 3kg each.

  • VioVet Staff

Yes this is safe to use for addng to the water of your pups. Each pup needs 1ml per 2kg in weight, and so at 3kg they will need 1.5mls each. Ideally you should make sure each pup gets this amount however this practically may be difficult. A compromise would be to add the entire dose for all 11 pups (16.5mls) to the water they have access to, once per day.
Puppies of this age will likely be getting most of their moisture intake through the milk though. If you notice they do not drink much of the water then you may wish to dose individually.

Milk supply post whelping

Karen McCallum

  • VioVet customer since 2015
  • From: Berwickshire, United Kingdom

Does this work alongside hydration and increased food intake to maintain a healthy milk supply in lactating bitches? Are there any risks to giving it post whelping? Thanks

  • VioVet Staff

This supplement contains Calcium and VItamin D, both of which can be deficient during the whelping and lactation process. It does not directly impact hydration or food intake, but it does help support the bitch's nutritional needs during this time.
The only risk to giving a supplement like this would be in significantly overdosing on the ingredients, however if you follow the feeding guidelines then you need not worry about this.

Dilution

Cj

0.5ml per kg of a nursing queen into water or feed.
I would need to use 4ml how much water should that go into, so that I don't dilute it to much, her drinking bowl holds 500ml water

  • VioVet Staff

The full amount can be mixed into as much water as your cat will drink within 24 hours. We recommend mixing this with an amount smaller than your cat will drink over this time though to ensure the full dose is taken.
Work out roughly how much your cat drinks per day and then mix the 4mls into around 20-50% of this amount. Top up the bowl when the dose is given and it is empty.

If your queen is 8kg then they will be drinking roughly 400mls a day so if needing an estimate then mixing the amount into 50 to 100mls is a good suggestion. If on wet food then they may drink less than this.

Preeclampsia

Rachel

My dog is panting and shaking and taking time away from puppies since she finished whelping 5.5hrs ago. She had Collo-Cal day 3 days in lead up to whelping, during whelping and I just gave her a dose now. She is panting less (just rapid breathing now) and back in feeding puppies. How soon can I give her more. I’m terrified she’s going to develop Eclampsia

  • VioVet Staff

It is advised to feed a Calcium/Vitamin D supplement like this during lactation so you are doing the right thing. The birth process can be very stressful for your dog so it is likely this is the cause of the panting. You should not exceed the recommended dose as per the packaging, if you are concerned about your dog then I strongly advise chatting to your vet.

Dog in labour

Elaine

What dosage should you give to a 20kg dog during contractions before each puppy?

  • VioVet Staff

This supplement contains calcium and vitamin D. This does not support the birthing process specifically, it is mainly advised to help support lactation where calcium and vitamin D requirements are higher. You do not need to dose this before contractions but supplementation is advised as per the feeding guidelines daily to support lactation.

Collo-cal D Over dose

Mr R Fryer

What is the chance of over dosing calcium to a 6 month old puppy fed BAFA raw diet and supplimented with Collo-cal D if given 1ml per 2kg body weight ?

  • VioVet Staff

Collo-Cal D is such a long-established product that a huge amount of experience has been gained regarding its use and potential side effects. The feedback from users gradually gets back to the manufacturer who can then adjust the dose recommendations as required. You can be sure that the recommended dose is a sensible and prudent guideline, and I would recommend that you follow it. Raw meat diets are prone to problems due to lack of available calcium/vitamin D so reducing the dose would carry its own risks. If you go with the recommended dose, you are in good company and I am sure it will give good results.
