Description

Canaural ear drops are licensed to treat infection of the outer ear canal in dogs and cats. Canaural drops contain a range of ingredients which between them cover the main types of bacteria, yeasts and ear mites commonly found. They also contain a medium potency steroid to relieve pain and itching. The oily formulation is good at loosening and removing waxy debris which tends to accumulate in ear infections. Available online from Viovet. Just send us a prescription from your own vet, place the order with us, and we will send it to you at online prices.

Ringo has been suffering from an on going infection that was proving difficult to clear up. This product appears to have made a marked improvement however the dog still has to re-visit the vet.

Good for fungal infections, reasonable for bacterial but useless for mite infestations.

lyn

can I buy these drops without a prescription. I have had them from the vet on a previous occasion.

  • VioVet Staff

These are prescription only ear drops so unfortunately they cannot be purchased unless you have a written prescription from your vet.
If you would like guidance on controlling ear issues then I advise reading our blog 'Itchy Ears'. Over the counter ear cleaners can be of great benefit in some cases.

Cat ear mites

Mrs Diana Mason

Are Canaural ear drops the most effective way of curing ear mites in cats, or is there something better?

  • VioVet Staff

Hi Diana,

Thornit Canker Powder is really highly regarded (we have plenty of reviews you can read) and your cat may also prefer a pinch of powder being applied that a liquid, but it's totally up to you.

Both products have great reviews but I've personally used Thornit on both of my dogs, in their ears and on their paws last summer when they suffered with harvest mites.

If your cat's ears are infected, then Canaural is probably a better option to begin with, as secondary infection from scratching her ears will need to be addressed, and it will also help to dull the itching and pain. The product is advertised for combating mites and loosening debrix in the ear, so it's a good all-round product.

If infection isn't a problem at the moment, then you could use either product - whichever you feel would be easiest for you to apply.

Hopefully she is mite-free and comfortable soon!

Kind regards,

Danielle
