Description

Zylkene is a complementary feed for dogs, cats and horses (for horse version click here) which contains a natural product, derived from casein, a protein in milk. It is a molecule well known to promote the relaxation of newborns after breastfeeding. Launched in April 2008, Zylkene has become a familiar product for veterinary surgeons, behaviourists, nurses and pet owners for use in helping pets cope when facing unusual and unpredictable situations or before occasions such as a change in their normal environment.

Zylkene is a product that can help support dogs, cats and horses in situations where they find the need to adapt their behaviour to cope. These include kennel and cattery stays, house moves, kennel/box rest, arrival of a new pet or baby, sudden noises e.g. fireworks, travel, vet or groomer visits and christmas festivities.

There are many ways our pets can respond to new and unpredictable situations and not all animals respond in the same way. Zylkene is palatable and easy to give; simply mix with food or give as a treat. Give just once a day.

Product Overview

There are many reports in the literature of remarkably good responses to Zylkene. In dogs and cats it is particularly good for travel, re-homing, grooming, visiting the vets etc. For horses, Zylkene Equine can easily be given in feed for clipping, travelling, shoeing etc.

Zylkene can help in many situations where animals might be expected to feel anxious or stressed. However do remember that you have a part to play too. Our animals have a phenomenal ability to pick up on signals we give them. Zylkene works best when combined with thoughtful and considerate handling from calm and sensible people!

Suitable for situations such as:

  • Changes in environment

  • Being left alone

  • New person, baby or pet being introduced

  • Travelling

  • Kennel or cattery visits

  • Fireworks

  • Loud noises and thunderstorms

  • Vet visits

  • Celebrations

  • Moving house

  • Lactation

  • Weaning

Tried Zylkene for 20 days with our cocker spaniel, she being excitable and very bark. No discernible difference noticed, she's off it now for past few days, no worse, no better. Pays your money, takes your chances, I assume it works for some dogs else it wouldn't be on the market still, but didn't hit the spot for our pet.

My Freyja is terrified of fireworks, so much that she starts fitting. Zylekene is the only thing I have found that calms her down but don't upset her stomach.

55 Works great for some dogs but not as much for others

We had used these previously and they worked great for our 30kg Staffie / Alsatian mix but were less effective for our 10kg Pug / Staffie but she's way more excitable, and a bit barmy
Really easy to give, just add to a handful of small treats and they disappear very fast

Q & A

Below are some recent questions we've received regarding Zylkene, including answers from our team.

How long is it safe to use for?

Sally

Was just wondering how long this is safe to use for? I have a cat who has become very anxious after our baby became mobile. We've used these for a couple of weeks after the vet prescribed them and have noticed a difference, but they never mentioned how long we could keep using them for.
Thank you

  • VioVet Staff

Zylkene can be used both short or long term. For long term use, please
give Zylkene to your pet for one month then reassess her behaviour and
continue if needed. We recommend speaking to your vet if there is a long
term problem to ensure there are no underlying causes and address any
underlying issues with behavioural therapy alongside Zylkene.

Different dosage small capsules vs chews?

M Schnauzer

We have a 6kg mini schnauzer. On the 75mg capsules recommended dose is 2 a day, but the 75mg chews say 1 a day up to 10kg? Is that correct?

  • VioVet Staff

The most up to date doseage for Zylkene can be found from the Zylkene website itself. I have pasted the dosing table below for your convenience. I can confirm that the capsule doseage is exactly the same as that of the chews.Screenshot 2021-01-12 at 15.58.24.png

What would you recommend the length of time to give Zylkene to a very nervous and anxious dachshund? Thank~you

  • VioVet Staff

Zylkene is safe to use in the short and long term. I recommend giving the product for as long as is needed, for example if this is a firework phobia then give this daily throughout the firework season.
If the anxiety is not seasonal or preventable then I strongly advise you undertake behavioural training to help you dog not fear the issue in the first place. Long term calmers are safe but will not resolve the underlying fear

Gulping

Natasha Granville

Hello. I have adopted a ginger cat. She is 15. When she was a kitten she had her collar too tight. So now she gulps. Shes quite nervous too. Will this product help her with her gulping please? Thanks tasha x

  • VioVet Staff

Zylkene is a calming supplement and helps with mild fears/anxieties. It should help relieve some of the 'nervous' issues you are seeing and is worth trying for this. If the gulping is actually a behavioural problem related to previous trauma then it may help relieve this too. However the gulping could be due to permanent structural damage from the collar when your cat was younger, if this is the case then you are unlikely to see any improvement to the gulping specifically.

Mixing with another Supplement

Lizzy

I have a very anxious rescue dog. Started him on Maxxicalm tablets and feel like he is settling a bit, still early days. We are going to stay for 10 days with relatives and last time we took the dog away with us he found adjusting to a new house stressful. Can I give him Zylkene over this time as an extra boost? I notice both have Magnesium in them and don’t want him to have too much.....

  • VioVet Staff

The two products are relatively similar, due to risk of overdose I would not recommend using both together. However you can use a spray/diffuser calmer, such as the Pet Remedy range, alongside an oral calmer. I would recommend doing this instead.

Hello.
I want to know how many capsules in "pack of 100" are.
Thank you.

  • VioVet Staff

There are 100 capsules in a pack of 100. The strength of the capsules you need (75mg, 225mg or 450mg) is dependent on the weight of your dog or cat. Please see guide below:

The recommended daily amount should be given in one intake.

The capsule can be opened and the powder mixed with food or a treat.

Combination with other supplements

Amanda

Can I give zylkene with Seren-um? Two of my five cats are not getting on and both have been so stressed they have been spraying in the house. I've been using Zylkene for a few days and things are better but still quite tense. I also wondered about the valerian spot on for some quick calm.
Thanks for your help

  • VioVet Staff

You can use Zylkene with Seren-um since they work in different ways however I would suggest using only one at a time since you won't know which one is having an effect if you use both together. I would actually try a Feliway Friends diffuser over the calmers though. It has been clinically proven to reduce conflict between housemate cats.

what dosage would you recommend for a small terrier

  • VioVet Staff

I would guess that your dog weighs somewhere between 5-10kg in which case you would need to give 2 of the 75mg capsules per day.

37.5 Kilos large Greyhound what dosage does he require, he is not overly anxious but they do bother him?

  • VioVet Staff

The correct dose for your dog would be 2 large dog capsules a day. I would start them 2 days before the event- in this case I am presuming bonfire night! In particularly anxious dogs it is worth starting the capsules up to 7 days before the event but it sounds as though your dog will be fine starting 2 days before.

Cattery agression

Susan Blanchflower

  • VioVet customer since 2016

Would zylkene in your opinion help my main coons visit to the Cattery, he has been going to the same Cattery since he was young. The Cattery tells me he settles in OK but when it's time to go home he turns into a wild cat, spitting and growling and very aggressive, it takes him about a day to get back to his normal gentle personality.

  • VioVet Staff

I would have thought zylkene would be very helpful for your cat in this situation. It certainly won't do him any harm so is definitely worth a try next time he goes to the cattery.
