Surface and Farm Equipment Disinfection

Surface Disinfection:

The level of disease-causing organisms present after basic cleaning can remain high enough to offer a serious disease challenge to livestock. Using a proven disinfectant such as Virkon S against viruses, bacteria, fungi, and moulds is essential.

Surface Disinfection Dilution Rate Application
Routine Disinfection for all surfaces, earth, wood, and concrete 1:100
(10 grams of Virkon S to every 1 litre of water)
Using a pressure washer or other mechanical sprayer, apply Virkon S solution at an application rate of 300 ml/m2

To estimate the total surface area to be disinfected, including walls and ceilings, multiply the total floor area by 2.5.

  4. Using a pressure washer or other mechanical sprayer, apply Virkon® S solution at an application rate of 300ml/m2.

Farm Equipment Disinfection

All farm equipment must be thoroughly cleaned and disinfected prior to use or transfer between sites to remove any potential disease-causing organisms and cross contamination.

Farm Equipment Disinfection Dilution Rate Application
Routine cleaning and disinfection of movable farm equipment 1:100
(10 grams of Virkon S to every 1 litre of water)
Using a brush or pressure washer, wash all equipment in Virkon S solution until visibly clean

Terminal and Continuous Disinfection

All water systems can potentially contain some viral and bacterial contamination, especially header tanks where dust and debris can accumulate. Disinfection will clean the system and eliminate viruses, bacteria and fungal growth.

Water System
Dilution Rate Application
Terminal Disinfection 1:200 - 1:100 Isolate header tank at the mains and drain off to drinker points farthest from tank. Clean out any gross soiling and debris. Refill with water and add the appropriate volume of Virkon S powder, thoroughly stir and leave for 10 minutes. Flush system through to all drain-off points and leave for a further 50 minutes before draining system and refilling with clean water.

Disinfectant Foot Dip Preparation and Use

Disinfectant foot dips act as a demonstrable and highly visible sign that biosecurity and disease prevention is taken seriously and more importantly they help prevent disease transfer onto and around farm sites. Place foot dips at all main farm/site entrances, and at entrances to farm buildings and ensure that all personnel and visitors use them.

Disinfection Dilution Rate Application
Routine Disinfection of Footwear 1:100 (10 grams of Virkon S to every 1 litre of water) Replace solution once it has either become soiled or aftera period of 4-5 days.

How to Make a Virkon S Disinfectant Foot Dip

Fill a suitable container with water adding 50 grams of Virkon S to every 5 litres of water (1:100 dilution rate), stir until dissolved.

Provide two hand brushes with every foot dip. One to remove organic matter prior to disinfection and one to use within the foot dip to wash the boot with.

How to Use a Virkon S Disinfectant Foot Dip

1. Using a stiff bristled hand brush, remove as much organic matter as possible from the boots remembering to pay particular attention to the sole.

2. Place boot into the foot dip and scrub using a soft hand brush making sure that the whole boot is washed thoroughly with disinfectant solution and paying particular attention to the sole.

3. Replace disinfectant solution on a daily basis disposing of soiled disinfectant responsibly around the farm.

Aerial Disinfection

Misting, Aerial Spraying, Cold and Thermal Fogging

To control organisms that can be introduced into a building during the setting up procedure, and to disinfect inaccessible areas of the building and the air, use either a fine mist sprayer or thermal fogging machine to apply Virkon® S disinfectant solution evenly.

Aerial Disinfection Dilution Rate Application
Misting/Aerial Spray 1:200 Using either a pressure washer or knapsack sprayer on its finest mist setting and apply at 1 litre of Virkon S solution per 10m2 of floor space.
Cold Fogging 1:100 Use a mechanical mister to apply the Virkon® S solution at a rate of 1 litre per 10m2 of floor space.
Thermal Fogging 1:25 (4%) solution of Virkon S in an 85:15 water Virkon S Fog Enhancer mixture Using a thermal fogging machine apply the prepared solution at 1 litre per 40m2 of floor space.

Aerial Disinfection in the Presence of Livestock

Virkon S can be misted in the presence of livestock or poultry at a dilution rate of 1:200 (0.5%).

A cold fogger or mister should be used, as the noise of a thermal fogger may disturb the animal’s behaviour.

Always read the Virkon S label carefully to ensure regulatory compliance.

Q & A

Below are some recent questions we've received regarding Virkon S Disinfectant, including answers from our team.

I want to use this as a disinfect for my rabbit and guinea pig wooden cages and runs. Will this be ok for them or will it be harmful? Do you have to rinse it off afterwards?

  • VioVet Staff

Hello Kel,

Thank you for your question.

Virkon would be fine for disinfecting rabbit and guinea pig accommodation. After using, Virkon should be washed away and the area allowed to dry before re-introducing the animals.

Hope this helps.

Can I dilute virgon S in water and give it to pigeons in their drinking water as medicine against diseases?

  • VioVet Staff

Virkon S is not classed as a medicine, however, Dupont have supporting data for its use with it being added to Poultry drinking water at a rate of 1:1000 (1g of Virkon S powder to 1L of water).

Whilst Dupont do not have supporting data for its use for pigeons we have anecdotal data for it being added to the drinking water of pigeons. There are pigeon enthusiasts who have their blogs/websites, where they mention their success in using it at 1:1000 (1g of Virkon S powder to 1L of water), in their pigeon drinking water.

Lynn P

Would this be effective against Coccidiosis?

  • VioVet Staff

Virkon is an excellent product for viruses, bacteria and fungi. The manufacturer makes no claims for activity against coccidia and so I do not think it would be effective for you. Often the problem with coccidia is weight of numbers and so cleaning the area effectively and getting rid of faecal residues, then providing clean bedding can be as effective. Animals soon build up immunity to coccidia naturally, so if they come accros the infection in small doses from the start, disease will not develop.
