Cod liver oil side effects

Christine

I have just begun using Vetzyme cod liver oil at the stated dose with my elderly Labs but have noticed they produce loose stools. Could this be caused by the oil and, if so, is there an alternative supplement I could give?

  • VioVet Staff

There can be many causes of loose stools in dogs. If all your dogs are affected and they all started the Cod Liver Oil just before the signs occured then it is possible that this has caused the problem. Some dogs are intolerant (allergic) to certain ingredients and this may be the case with your dogs.

I recommend you stop giving the oil for a trial period. If the stools normalise quite quickly after stopping then it was like this that has caused the problem. I would advise trying a different supplement if this is the case, please contact us on [email protected] if you would like information on what supplement to choose. The ideal supplement for your dogs depends on what you are trying to cover for (e.g. joint problems or coat care etc).
