Below are some recent questions we've received regarding Vetruus Otodine Ear Solution, including answers from our team.

Dizzy

Jess

I used otodine ear cleaner on my spaniel as he started shaking his head, after using it he became dizzy, is this a normal reaction?

  • VioVet Staff

Any kind of neurological sign after using an ear cleaner can imply the ear drum is perforated. I strongly advise you stop giving the ear cleaner or any other drops unless advised by your vet, and go see your vet for a consult. Ear cleaners/drops can cause neurological problems if used with a damaged ear drum.
There is a chance your dog was dizzy due to the head shaking though but it is worth ruling out a ruptured ear drum first.

Sore ears

Rebecca

Hi, does this product cause the dogs to scratch the ears on top of the issue as the pup is making her ears very sore from her nails then causing at times to bleed - didnot know if as it dried felt funny?
I have been recommended by vet for this product, our 9 mth Shar Pei seems to have irritated ears, She is "Fear Reactive" (had a very bad experience from previous vets) and having desensitization visits to the new vets, (who are brilliant) however an indepth examination of ears is not possible yet, I am able to get up close and personal with her ears and Vets are happy for me to proceed, I do feed back to the vets and will take if they recommend.

Thanks

This product is an ear cleaner and should not normally cause excessive itching of the ear. Rarely a reaction to the product can occur but it is more likely that the ears are infected/inflamed and a prescription ear drop is required to reduce this. Ear cleaning alone can help clear mild infections but it sounds like the issue is more severe in your pup.
I recommend contacting your local vet to discuss this further, you can purchase prescription ear drops from our website alongside a written prescription from your vet.

Ear problem

Joyce

My Westie has an ear problem, inside is very crusty and she keeps shaking her head and scratching it. I am unable to get to a vet at the moment, any suggestions please to help ease the problem. I am thinking it could be the fact that she suffers with skin problems, and even more so as she gets older, she is now 13.

Otodine is an ear cleaner and can be very helpful for ear problems like that which you describe. I recommend reading our blog 'Itchy Ears' for more information on approaching the problem.

Ear drops

Diane

My dog has very bad yeast infection in her ears. What would you recommend I use to clear it up.

  • VioVet Staff

It sounds like you will need to see your vet for prescription ear drops. Most of these contain anti-fungal medication needed to clear up yeast infections which the non-prescription ear cleaners don't. Once you have seen your vet and they have confirmed the ear drum is intact (I cannot stress how important this is) you could try using white vinegar mixed equally with water which makes the ear a less favourable environment for yeast. For an average size dog 10 drops in each ear is enough- massage the ear and wipe away any excess but don't stick anything down the ear such as cotton wool.
