Vetmedin is a pet medication containing Pimobendan which can open up the main blood vessels to the heart to reduce blood pressure and is commonly used to treat heart failure in dogs. It can also make the heart work more efficiently and clinical studies indicate that this can increase life expectancy. Dogs may need to take this medication for the rest of their lives, though improvements can usually be seen in a few days. Vetmedin medication is available in different strengths for different sized animals and is in the form of chewable tablets — making it is easy to administer. Browse more prescription medications.
Vetmedin is used mostly in dogs with defective heart valves (valvular insufficiency or regurgitation, often as a result of nodular endocardiosis). If the valves in the heart fail to operate properly, blood flows back when the valves are supposed to be closed, making the heart less efficient as a pump. This also makes a whooshing sound in the heart, called a heart murmur, which vets can hear using a stethoscope. Vetmedin acts on the muscle of the heart and of blood vessel walls, helping the heart to beat more efficiently.
Vetmedin is also used to treat heart problems where the muscle has become stretched and weak (dilated cardiomyopathy). The heart muscle can contract more powerfully, improving circulation to the body tissues. This medication can be used on its own, but usually one or more other drugs are used to add to increase the beneficial effects.
Vetmedin is not suitable for dogs under the age of six months and should not be given to pregnant or nursing dogs. Care should also be taken with animals suffering from conditions such as diabetes and who are already taking other medications. Your vet will be able to determine if there is a risk of interactions with any other pet medication.
Vetmedin can only be obtained with a prescription from the vet. Buying prescription pet meds online still requires a written prescription, which must be sent with the order before the drugs can be supplied.

The product is very effective at supporting the heart (due to ill health caused by heart failure).

Vetmedin was prescribed for my old dog as he has heart disease. He’s not got any worse, but he's a dog so it is difficult to gauge the effect. The pills are very cheap against the vet price, so that is the good thing.

I need to know if these are similar to the cardisure flavoured tablets. I need to crust them and and add water so I can give via syringe to my cockatoo.
The Vetmedin tables are half the price of the cardisure tables.
I've tried the vetmedin capsules but they taste disgusting so I can't use them.
yes it is flavoured all the way through

Would I need a prescription every time I order or just the first time?
Thank you for your enquiry. How often a new prescription is needed depends on what your vet has specified on the prescription itself.
Most prescriptions are valid for six months, and your vet can include repeats on the prescription if ongoing medication is required.
Once we have the prescription on file, you have the flexibility to order all of the medication at once or on a monthly basis, depending on what is most convenient for you.
If you are unsure about your specific prescription or repeat options, it’s best to confirm with your vet. Once we have the prescription, we can make the ordering process quick and straightforward.

Can you supply Vetmedin in an oral suspension form. We are buying it from Australia at present, but their rules are changing and we will not be able to buy from there from 01/09/25 ?
Currently we only provide/stock capsules, tablets and injection solutions of Vetmedin.

Our vet gave us chewable tablets, would it matter if we bought the capsules instead assuming we give the same dose (10mg)?
Hi we can only supply exactly what is on the prescription
Jolene
Can you half the capsules of 5mg or are these powder inside?
Thanks
The datasheet does not advise dosing in this way and so we cannot advise whether it is safe or not. Your vet may provide off licence advice and recommend you can do this though, it is best to discuss this with them.

Can the vetmedin 5mg tablets be splited to 4? Are they scored only for half or also for quaters?
These tablets are only scored once so they can be split in half. They cannot be quartered.

is this a "controlled drug" -I have a daily prscription covering 6months - can I order 3months now & again in 3months on same prescription
This is not a controlled drug and so you can order multiple times up to the maximum total quantity your vet has stated on your prescription (including repeats). Prescriptions for non-controlled drugs are valid for up to 6 months from the date of issue unless your vet states a shorter expiry.
Assuming your vet has prescribed you 6 months worth and the expiry date is 6 months away then yes, what you describe should be fine.

Our dig has reduced appetite since going on Vetmedin,
She is 5.75 kg and takes 5mg split into two doses, would a lower dose help with this side effect
Reduced appetite (anorexia) is a rare side effect of this medication as per the datasheet. It is important you discuss this further with your prescribing vet, they will need to report this to the manufacturer. Unfortunately only they can advise on whether a dose change is suitable or appropriate.

I get my Vetmedin tablets from my vets because they supply an invoice for me to claim it back from my pet insurance. Are you able to do the same thing if so I can get a prescription and buy from you instead
Yes, all invoices can be found alongside which prescription they came out of on your account on our website. These are accessible anytime. Just head to 'Account' > 'Track previous orders' and then 'Download invoice'.

Is it best to give thr tablets 12 hours apart or must it be an hour before food?
According to the datasheet this medication should be given every 12 hours, at least 1 hour before food (on an empty stomach). If you cannot do one or the other then you should contact your vet so they can advise which you should prioritise.
