Specific Heart & Kidney Support is a complete food dogs with heart and kidney problems. It has been specially formulated to be fed to dogs with heart failure (with concurrent kidney failure), hypertension, oedema, chronic renal insufficiency, hepatic insufficiency (except patients with cholestasis), urate, oxalate or cystine urolithiasis. This food contains high levels of Omega-3 fatty acids which help to slow down kidney failure. EPA will help dogs with heart disease as it helps to counteract cachexia, improves arrhythmia and reduces hypertension and platelet aggregation. The food also has reduced sodium levels which will help to prevent water retention, which is dangerous for dogs with heart, kidney or liver problems. It also has reduced protein levels and an alkaline PH which will help to prevent hyperammonaemia in dogs with liver failure and reduce azotemia in dogs with renal failure. The food also has reduced phosphorus levels which are key in slowing kidney insufficientcy and will help to prevent hyperphosphataemia.

As the food is intentionally bland we had to mix a teaspoon of tuna in to entice our dog to eat it at first but after a few days she took to eating it without. There was a noticeable difference in how many times she was asking to go out in a relatively short time period of about a week and fewer accidents which hopefully means her kidneys aren’t struggling as much.

Below are some recent questions we've received regarding SPECIFIC (Dechra) CKD Heart & Kidney Support Dry Dog Food, including answers from our team.

Is this food suitable for a senior dog with one kidney who also suffers from pancreatitis
If your dog has one kidney but has no signs of renal disease then you may not need to feed specifically for the kidney issues. The body can function perfectly well with one kidney. I advise discussing what diet you should use with your vet to be certain. The fat content of most kidney diets are higher than is ideal for pancreatitis.

My dog has been eating Hills u/d wet food for 3 yrs the vet thinks I might have to change to helphelp him
The two diets are not comparable alternatives. If your dog has been on u/d for 3 years then that would normally be to help with control of certain types of bladder stone. The new diet you are talking about is for heart &/or kidney problems. Hills do diets for heart and for kidney problems, as do a number of other manufacturers. The main thing is to decide what medical condition(s) may be affecting your dog, what the priorities are, then pick a diet which is most likely to be beneficial for that. If your dog has developed heart trouble, or failing kidneys, then indeed you should change the diet I think, but really this is a decision for you to make in conjunction with your own vet, who will better understand the priorities affecting your particular dog.

2.1/2 years golden retriever kidney disease since state 3 given k/d and hills renal food. Recent hormonal problem looking for something different to eat. No heart problems
Is this food suitable for my dog?
This diet is formulated to be suitable for dogs with chronic renal insufficiency and so should be comparable in this regard to the other diets you have used. Generally dogs with this problem do not eat well and so it might always be difficult to get your dog to eat enough food, but changing diets can be a help. It should be fine to try on your dog.
