Nutriplus gel

Could Nutriplus Gel exacerbate diarrhea in cats with IBD?

  • VioVet Staff

Nutri‑Plus Gel can exacerbate diarrhea in cats with IBD due to its high fat, sugar, and magnesium content. That doesn't mean all IBD cats will have issues — many tolerate small amounts. But caution, slow introduction, and veterinary guidance are essential.

Pancreatitis in dog and nutrigel plus

Karla

We have a senior dog who was recently treated for pancreatitis and showed great improvement after three weeks of treatment. However, she experienced a flare-up a few days ago, despite being on a strict diet of gastro low-fat food and chicken breasts. She also receives a daily supplement of Nutri-Gel. Since Nutri-Gel contains high-fat ingredients, could it have contributed to the flare-up?

  • VioVet Staff

As you are already under the direction of a vet, unfortunately we are unable to provide any further advice. We would suggest that you contact your vet on this occasion as they already have a treatment plan set out for you.

Pancreatitis

joan

12 year old dog, mongrel, rescue. Has had digestive issues all his life. Vet always said IBD. Now scan shows enlarged pancreas, with possible cyst. Stomach gurgles then brings up bile in mornings. On famotidine for acid reflux. Happens about once a week. He generally recovers by lunchtime and I have given him nutri-plus gel all his life which he loves. Recent allergy test proves positive for many foods including rice, eggs milk soya ++ Is it O.k. to give him the nutri-plus which contains soy etc. in view of allergies and low fat required. Thank you

  • VioVet Staff

Nutri-Plus is a very safe vitamin/nutritional supplement but it does contain some ingredients that your dog may be reacting to. I recommend trialling off the gel for now. If there is no improvement within 8 weeks off the gel then it is unlikely causing any issues and you are safe to restart.
It is however always best to run any dietary changes past the vet who is treating your animal just in case.

Suitable for CKD Cat

Lorraine Spurgeon

  • VioVet customer since 2015
  • From: Worcestershire, United Kingdom

Our 7 year old Norweigan Forest Cat has been diagnosed with CKD with Proteinurea and high globulin ( protein in blood). He is also borderline anemic which is why I would like to give him NutriGel as a "pick me up". He is on Semintra for the Proteinurea and Famotidine to control acid although only 2 more days of this. Also receiving B12 injection from the vets. He does like the gel and feel he needs the boost but wanted to double check its ok to use for CKD cat. We are trying to keep him on low protein and low phosphorus diet.

  • VioVet Staff

The main thing for your cat is probably a low protein, low phosphorus diet along with the other products you are giving. The Nutri-Plus Gel is OK to give if a "pick-me-up" is needed on a particular occasion, but it might not be a good idea on a regular basis. It is high in energy and might leave him feeling less inclined to eat his normal food. I think if you do use it the vitamin and energy content could be a definite help, but you should ensure that he is still eating his appropriate kidney diet properly. The kidney diet will have a full range of all the nutrients he needs in it, so really that should be the best food for him.
