45 Very Effective for Covering up Surgery sites

Neat and simple way of preventing our dog from licking her surgery wounds (she has a scar from just under her ribs all the way down to her vulva) Although she doesn't usually like wearing anything she quickly got used to the shirt and wore it almost all day every day for 2 weeks while her scar healed.

My dog suffers with a very severe seasonal allergy to pollens etc and was forever licking and nibbling at her tummy and making herself even more itchy and uncomfortable. I hit on the idea of this vest to protect her a) whilst on a walk to protect her tummy somewhat from pollens (obviously with the flaps undone to accommodate toileting needs) and b) very importantly during the night as she can’t lick etc she settles and the itching dies down because not constantly irritating). Of course the flaps are fastened during night. So we all get some sleep! She wears extra small by day and small by night to give her plenty of stretching out room. The collars are a bit tight for her so considering cutting off. All in all for her needs works well. Realise this won’t work when very hot as wouldn’t want her to overheat. Ps I did run this past our vet who thought it a good idea.

Q & A

Below are some recent questions we've received regarding MPS Medical Pet Shirt for Dogs, including answers from our team.

Medical pet shirt

Wayne

Do you make them to order as I have a small jack Russel
Who suffers with a allergy to grass his belly is red from the grass irritation
He is on tablets to help keep it down .
This would be ideal for him if you do .
Thanks Wayne

  • VioVet Staff

This shirt is a great choice at helping prevent grass or other allergens touching the belly. However it won't prevent the allergens touching the feet/legs. Your dog can also not toilet with the shirt on, you will need to unbutton it when they have to toilet.

The size of the MPS-Medical Pet Shirt is best measured from the collar to the base of the tail. You can then match this measurement to the sizes on our website. If your dog is somewhere between two sizes, MPS recommend going for the smaller size.

Washable ?

ChrisP

I have been using a shirt since my bitch was neutered but I would like to know if it is washable and if it will tumble dry.

  • VioVet Staff

Yes these shirts are washable. I recommend reading the label on the product itself to work out at what temperature and whether it is tumble dry safe.

Can the dog still toilet normally?

Gordon McGinn

Hi, we have a bitch Labrador, and although she may be finished her season, we wondered if this is a deterrent to other dogs who are still trying to woo my bitch?
I realise that this won't be guaranteed in any way, but if she's wearing it, can she still toilet as normal without having to remove the suit?
Thanks.

  • VioVet Staff

This shirt will cover the rear area so unfortunately your dog cannot toilet whilst wearing it. This does mean it may help prevent unwanted attention but a lot of this attention is related to scent/smells. This is extremely hard to prevent with a shirt so may not resolve the issue. It will provide a slight physical barrier though.
The shirt does unbutton easily though at the back, and this can be done when your dog goes to toilet.

Product efficiency outside

Adam Parkinson

I would like to know how effective the shirt would be outside our spaniel is due to be neutered next summer and he gets really wet when outside would we need to buy two one for inside that can stay dry and one for outside that can get wet , muddy and not transfer it to the sofa

  • VioVet Staff

The product will stay on, even if your dog is walking/running outdoors, but it is not waterproof so can get muddy and wet. If your using the shirt after your dog has had an operation then we strongy advise limiting walks/running anyway depending on the operation.
It is wise to buy 2 shirts if possible. When one becomes wet or dirty you can wash it and put the other shirt on in the mean time. It can take only a few minutes of the shirt being off for your dog to rip their stitches out so it is worth being safe and always having the shirt on.
For male dogs you will need to roll the shirt up when he goes to urinate but this is easily done using the poppers at the back.

Is it suitable after neutering?

Kalpa01

Is it useful for post surgery healing?

  • VioVet Staff

Yes this shirt is perfect to help a dog recover post neutering surgery. It will prevent licking of the site and the wound becoming dirty from rubbing on surfaces. The incision site for a neutering surgery is usually along the belly for females and a bit further back near the groin for males. The shirt will cover these sites. It is important to note that you need to role up the shirt for your dog to toilet without soiling it, but this is usually predictable (e.g. just before letting outside).

Colour

Jennifer Agate

A friend lent me a black one of these for my wee bitch to use after her spay. She has chewed at the poppers so I'm going to have to replace it. Is the one pictured here black as the borrowed one is but I only seem to be seeing blue ones available?
They're a great job by the way, just don't be lazy like me and leave the poppers undone after she's been out for a wee!

  • VioVet Staff

The MPS medical pet shirts only come in blue. Perhaps you are thinking of a different brand, such as the Dog Recovery Suits:

Measuring dog

Gary

What’s the best way to measure your dog do you get an accurate size?

  • VioVet Staff

MPS have a sizing guide on their website, I advise using this for the most accurate measurements:

Does the shirt have velcro

Jacqueline

My long haired German shepherd has a problem with his right side and we thought this might help but we wondered how we would get it on him whether it had Velcro ? We do have leg straps for him but we thought this would give him extra support as he’s just turned 8 so trying everything we can to help him.
Many thanks
Jacqueline

  • VioVet Staff

Hello,

Thank you for your question.

Unfortunately this does not have velcro; it has popper buttons instead.

I do hope this helps.
