I use this product on hedgehogs when they come to my rescue with an over burden of mites. It appears to do the trick as the mites become less of a problem.

Administering treatment

liana

can this be simply sprayed on to budgies back or is it dangerous to be sprayed anywhere near eyes, beak? meaning i have to physically grab the bird to ensure the spray doesn’t go near eyes or mouth like other mite treatments?

my birds are newly tamed and do not take well to unwanted touch or being held to the extent i would need to to ensure the treatment doesn’t get near their faces

  • VioVet Staff

Johnson’s Anti-Mite Extra is generally used to treat mites on birds, but with any spray treatment, especially on small birds like budgies, care is needed to avoid sensitive areas like eyes, nostrils, and beak.

Tips for Administering Johnson’s Anti-Mite Extra on Budgies:

  • Avoid spraying directly near the bird’s face, eyes, nostrils, or beak.

  • It’s safest to spray onto the bird’s back and feathers from a short distance, but try to keep the spray aimed away from the head.

  • You don’t have to hold the bird tightly, but some gentle restraint may be necessary to control movement and avoid accidental spraying near the face.

  • If your budgies are not used to handling, try using a towel to gently wrap or hold them, or enlist help from someone experienced with birds.

  • Alternatively, some people spray into their hands and then carefully rub it onto the bird’s back—this reduces risk near the face.

  • After treatment, monitor your birds to ensure no signs of irritation or distress.

Important:

  • Always follow the product instructions carefully and use the recommended dosage.

  • If you’re worried about stressing your birds or accidental contact with eyes/beak, consult your avian vet for advice on the safest way to apply treatment.

How often

Sophie

How often can you spray the birds? One of our birds sadly died of the mites and we want to make sure her husband doesn’t do the same. Would you advise daily for first week and then weekly thereafter?

  • VioVet Staff

This product should be repeated once weekly until the infestation is cleared. All dosing guidelines can be found on the tin itself, I advise following these closely.
