55 Great product...so glad I tried it!

I decided to try turmeric with my Irish cob because he was starting to get a bit of stiffness in his back end. After reading other reviews I thought I would see how it goes, being that there are other benefits with turmeric too. I have to say he seems a lot happier since he has been having it. He turned his nose up at it to begin with, but after giving small amounts in his feed, then gradually increasing the amount along with linseed oil, he loves it and licks his bowl clean! The best thing that has happened though is that he is a lot less itchy than he used to be!! He has always been an 'itchy' horse, particularly his mane and tail. He has to have his stable reinforced because he puts so much effort in his itching!!! I have tried all sorts of lotions, none of which really worked very effectively. So far this year, since using the turmeric, he has hardly itched at all. All I have seen him do is a bit of a bum rub, but not to the extent he used to. I got it for his stiffness, and ended up also improving his itchy skin! I really think that turmeric is a great supplement because of the many health benefits, and I will definately continue to use it.

Turmeric and Prascend

Emily

Can Turmeric be fed along with Prascend for Cushings to help with the winter stiffness?

  • VioVet Staff

Yes this supplement is safe to use alongside Prascend and in a Cushingoid horse.

Turmiric

Jackie Watson

Can i use the turmiric gold for horses on chicken too

  • VioVet Staff

This product is intended for use on horses only so I cannot advise if it is safe for use on chickens too. If you are looking for a turmeric product for your chickens then I recommend Natures Grub Spice Blend, this contains turmeric alongside other beneficial spices.

Can turmeric be fed with Prascend and is it suitable for a horse with Cushings?

  • VioVet Staff

Yes Turmeric Gold is safe to use alongside Prascend. It is a herbal supplement which has been shown to have some anti-inflammatory effects. It is not known exactly how this works though so I cannot say 100% it is safe for a Cushingoid horse, however based on what we do know this should be fine.

Palatability

Sue Deakin

My horse is quite fussy. He wont even eat his balancer anymore. Do horses usually readily eat tumeric ?

  • VioVet Staff

Turmeric has a strong bitter taste that most horses cope well with, but can be an issue for some fussy horses. You may want to use this alongside a palatale addition such as molasses or apple juice.

Tumeric

Julie

My pony is 23, 13.3hh and 330kg. What is the dosage and how long will a tub last? She takes 10-15ml Nettex Respiratory Boost and 40ml Linseed oil with a pinch of cinnamon dailly. She also has free access to 'Respiratory Lick' balancer. Is it safe to take Tumeric with these supplements?

She has Cushing's, EMS, Arthritis. Windgalls and Asthma/Allegies. Would Tumeric further benefit these conditions?

Thank you.

  • VioVet Staff

For a pony I would advise the following doseage:
Small pony: 1/2 -1 scoop once or twice daily
Tumeric contains curcumin as the active ingredient which can help reduce inflammation, in particular this could help with your horse's arthritis. It is safe to use alongside the ingredients you have listed.

What is the dosage for a cob pony

al

what is the dosage for a cob pony?

  • VioVet Staff

Hello,

Thank you for your query,

The average dose for a cob is between 1/2-2 scoops and for smaller ponies between 1/2-1 scoops.

I hope this helps you,

Black pepper?

lulu

I have been told that the pepper needs to be FRESHLY ground to have any effect. Would you be able to shed any light on this please? Thanks.

  • VioVet Staff

As far as I am aware the pepper does not need to be freshly ground. The compound in black pepper, Piperine, which allows the body to utilise more Turmeric is present whether the pepper is freshly ground or not. The reason freshly ground pepper is suggested is because you will just be receiving peppercorns rather than pepper with other spices which can happen when you purchase pre-ground pepper. The pepper in this supplement is cracked black pepper only.

Using Turmeric

DB

Can you tell me whether you should give Turmeric regularly or should you have a break now and then, I read in the Horse and Hound article that long term use can lead to anemia

  • VioVet Staff

There is no clinical evidence to suggest Turmeric can lead to anaemia though equally there is no clinical evidence to say that it doesn't. However, many horses take Turmeric daily long term without any problems so I wouldn't be too concerned about this.

Turmeric for Dogs

Belinda Eyland

  • VioVet customer since 2014

I am looking for a turmeric supplement for dogs and wondering if the equine products can be used on canines.

  • VioVet Staff

Where the sole ingredient is turmeric then I don't think it would do your dog any harm although it would be difficult to know what dose to give. However I wouldn't give this particular product since it contains black pepper which may cause a stomach upset for your dog. There are some very good dog joint supplements containing turmeric such as Seraquin, GWF Nutrition Joint Aid or our own Joint Force which you could have a look at.

Turmeric and bute

Anne Tunnicliffe

  • VioVet customer since 2016
  • From: Derbyshire, United Kingdom

My horse is on 1 bute every other day but I feel she is still in pain ( she has arthritis in her hocks and also AF)
so trying the turmeric . Is she ok to have both or should I tail off the bute? Thanks

  • VioVet Staff

It is perfectly safe to give Turmeric alongside the bute. If she is very painful you could speak with your vet about increasing the dose of bute to 1 sachet daily as well as adding in turmeric. There is a concern regarding liver damage associated with longterm use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatories such as bute but often quality of life is the primary concern.
