Description

All horses, regardless of their activity, experience strain affecting their musculoskeletal system. Repeated strain may lead to discomfort or stiffness, and creates specific nutritional requirements. HARPAGYL is a complementary feed formulated by AUDEVARD Laboratories. It is designed to provide nutritional support to meet the increased musculoskeletal needs of active and older horses.

Formula

The unique HARPAGYL formula offers maximum concentration (50% harpagophytum) and guaranteed harpagoside content. It is also reinforced with omega-3.

What users say...

Users like the commitment to select only the highest quality harpagophytum roots for use in HARPAGYL. They are checked for consistently high harpagoside content, to prevent any major variations in the composition of the product. Laboratoires AUDEVARD is also committed to taking an environmentally responsible approach to the use of this wild plant, which is found exclusively in the semi-desert regions of southern Africa and is therefore in limited supply.

Our advice

HARPAGYL can be used over short or longer periods. If your horse participates in competitions, EKYFLEX NODOLOX should be used instead, as it does not contain harpagophytum. EKYFLEX ARTHRO should be alternated with HARPAGYL to improve joint health in the long term. To choose the right joint solution, consult our guide.

I have been using Harpagyl for a few months now and really notice the difference in my horse. He has arthritic hocks and navicular changes in front and this has really improved his comfort and movement

I was told about Harpargyl by my vet for my elderly polo ponies who have their arthritic joints regularly injected. Trago’s front fetlocks were needing injecting every 3 months until I started using Harpargyl. Gradually over a year his joint injection intervals became longer and longer. He now only needs injections every 14-18 months! Brilliant for an 30yr old to still be actively ridden and playing polo!

So far, so good

My horse has bute over the winter to help with his arthritis, which I replace with Deveil's Claw in the summer to rest his gastrointestinal system. I normally use liquid but wanted pellets to be able to make up feeds the night before. The product appears to have seamlessly replaced the bute and my horse is comfortable and happy to eat, although weather and ground conditions have changed too, so may not all be down to the Harpagyl.

A H and Bute used on the same day on a rare occasion?

I am just starting to use Audevard Harpagyl and want to know if I can use A H and Bute on the same day on a rare occasion?
E.g. my horse is very pain sensitive in his hocks when being shod and I give him bute a few hours before the farrier arrives. Is it ok to do this ?

  • VioVet Staff

You should ideally consult with your veterinarian, especially if you're using both together regularly. Your vet will have a clearer understanding of your horse's specific needs and any potential risks based on their medical history.

Food additive or gel to apply

Bunnie

Sorry - bit thick today. This looks like a supplement to put in food, but the description does not say so? Please clarify.

  • VioVet Staff

HARPAGYL is a complementary feed formulated by AUDEVARD Laboratories. This means it is added to the normal diet to complement it.

How much harpagyl should I give my 28 year old 15hh horse?

  • VioVet Staff

The dose for this product is as follows. It does not vary with size/age:
Daily allowances: 1 measure = 15 g - 1 to 2 measures per day. Harpagyl may be given continuously or for periods of 1 to 2 months.

Is this product safe for horses witH EMS ?

  • VioVet Staff

The exact composition of Harpagyl is as follows:
Composition: Harpagophytum (Harpagophytum procumbens), sugar beet molasses, lithothamnion, alfalfa (Medicago sativa), inactivated brewer's yeast, linseed, linseed oil.

This does contain sugar beet which could interfere with Equine Metabilic Syndrome. It's best to avoid high sugar supplements/feeds with this condition. However Audevard have advised the following:

....the main
concern would be if a nutraceutical added a lot of sugar to the total
daily intake of the horse. The only source of
sugar in Harpagyl is from molasses used for the pellet consistency, and
this accounts for 3 g of sugar per 15 g scoop of product (equivalent to
a large carrot). This is unlikely to have an impact in the horse’s
insulin response, especially if Harpagyl is fed
alongside a larger fibre meal such as soaked hay.

In terms of pharmacological
interactions that could hinder the effect of pergolide when administered
together, there is no evidence to suggest that would be the case. In
fact, many owners of horses affected by laminitis
secondary to poorly controlled PPID rate Harpagyl to support their
horses’ comfort and reducing the overall need for oral medication.

Is this just a pain killer?

Laura

Will this supplement actually improve the condition of the horses joints or just mask the symptoms? Does it interact with bute? Thanks

  • VioVet Staff

This supplement is essentially Devils Claw which is a natural anti-inflammatory. It will offer some pain relief but will not improve joint health. It is advised not to use Devils Claw alongside bute since it may exacerbate potential side effects.
