Below are some recent questions we've received regarding Arden Grange Senior with Fresh Chicken & Rice Dog Food, including answers from our team.
Susan Jackson
I have an 11 year old golden retriever who has been on Arden Grange normal chicken and rice all her life. My vet has said she needs to lose some weight and I am not sure which one would be the best
Senior diets are not intended for weight loss specifically so no Senior diet will be great at this.
However a dog can actually lose weight on any diet. You should feed for the
ideal weight rather than the actual weight, reasses this every 2 weeks
by reweighing your dog and then reduce further if necessary. If this is
quite a large jump in food difference (e.g. your dog weighs 25kg but
needs to be 20kg) then I recommend doing this in stages and only 10-15%
of their bodyweight max at a time. For example if 25kg and needs to be
20kg then feed for a 22kg dog and then when this weight is achieved
start feeding for the 20kg weight.
The best way to work out the
ideal weight is by body condition scoring your dog. Your local vet nurse
can help you do this if you are not sure how. Cutting back on treats is
also extremely important, even things like dentastix can be high in
calorie. If helping with weight loss then ideally no human feed or
treats should be given.
