Advocate is a spot-on treatment used to control internal and external parasites affecting dogs, cats and ferrets. The contents of one pipette are applied to the skin on the back of the neck between the parted hair. The area is then left to dry, which might take a few hours. One of the active ingredients, moxidectin, is absorbed through the skin and travels around the body, treating internal parasites such as worms. The other active ingredient, imidacloprid, transfers across the surface of the body, dissolved in the oils on the surface of the skin and hairs. Surface living parasites such as fleas are killed on contact.
Of all the products available, Advocate probably kills the broadest range of parasites affecting dogs, cats and ferrets

Was advised by vet to start using when dog, border collie, was young. Easy to apply, no problems in 9yrs. Seems to help with the few ticks he's picked up. Only downer it is costly, but I think worth it.

Do l require a vet prescription to purchase Advocate Spot-on treatment for my dog from you.
Advocate is a prescription only medication, we would require a vet prescription to dispense this to you.

Please can you tell me if Advocate kills tapeworm, roundworm and lungworm
Advocate contains imidacloprid and moxidectin. It is commonly used as a treatment for parasites in pets, particularly dogs and cats. It is primarily used to treat and prevent:
Flea infestations: Advocate kills adult fleas and prevents their reproduction.
Heartworm disease: It helps to prevent heartworm infections caused by Dirofilaria immitis.
Ear mites: It can treat infestations of ear mites in cats and dogs.
Intestinal worms: It is effective against certain intestinal parasites like roundworms, hookworms, and whipworms in dogs.
Mange and Demodex mites: Advocate also treats skin conditions caused by Demodex mites (such as demodicosis) in pets.

I Have a 42-43kg (depends on scales) Boxer X, no he’s not over weight, but the sizes only go up to 40kg. Will this be ok. Also is this the one that leaves a chemical smell please. Thank you.
To be on the safe side, especially for a dog that’s slightly above the weight limit, it’s always best to check with your vet for personalised advice.

Will this work for ear mites? If so which one is the best please
Yes, Advocate does treat ear mites. The datasheet states the following regarding this use:
A single dose of the product should be administered. In dogs, loose debris should be gently removed from the external ear canal at each treatment. For both cats and dogs, a further veterinary examination 30 days after treatment is recommended as some animals may require a second treatment. Do not apply directly to the ear canal.

What does the 40 or 80 spot on mean? I have a 6kg cat which one is best?
Spot on refers to the application method, they are pipettes with liquid that are 'spotted onto' the skin on the back of the neck.
The 40 and 80 refers to the amount of liquid within each pipette. Each pipette of the small cat and ferret presentation contains 0.4 ml (40 mg imidacloprid, 4 mg moxidectin), the large cat presentation contains 0.8 ml (80 mg imidacloprid, 8 mg moxidectin).
According to the datasheet your 6kg cat will need one large pipette per dose. This is a prescription only medication so you should contact your vet regarding dose advice, they will need to write a written prescription for you to purchase the product.

Is Advocate suitable for kittens at 8 weeks of age?
If not what is a suitable flea and worm treatment?
How often should the treatment be given to kittens?
Many thanks
The datasheet for this product states 'Do not use in kittens under 9 weeks of age'. Use in an 8 week kitten is therefore not advised.
You can use Advantage at this age, which is over the counter. I recommend checking this out instead. It will not cover worms/mites though. You can use an over the counter wormer such as TermaWorm alongside Advantage to cover roundworms and tapeworms.

How long does a treatment last?
It is advised to repeat treatment with Advocate monthly.

I read that it kills fleas on cats, but does it also kill flea eggs on cats..
There are flea treatment products for medicating animals that will kill flea eggs. Fortunately this is not necessary for clearing a flea infestation though, I recommend reading our blog 'Help - my pet's got fleas!' for more information on tackling the issue.

Currently on Advocate but advised to consider Bravecto to cover ticks which product benefits outweigh each?
Advocate covers fleas, mites, lice and roundworm including lungworm. It does not cover ticks.
Bravecto covers fleas, mites, lice and ticks but it does not cover roundworm (or lungworm).
It is advised to discuss which is most suitable for your pet with your local vet as it varies depending on location within the country. Ticks and lungworm are both worth covering if you can, but depending on your area one may be more important to cover than the other.
