Below are some recent questions we've received regarding Surolan Ear Drops for Dogs & Cats, including answers from our team.
Karen 0057
My dog (female) has a very itchy vulva, which has a very slight discharge which shows on wipes (very minimal brown colour) when cleaning the area. There is no smell. She is very distressed and not resting properly because of the itching. She is 3, and a Bodeguero cross.
She had Surolan for itchy paws, then itchy ears. The vet has now told me to use it on her vulva. Is that safe?
She has had blood tests and skin scrapes which have all been found to be negative.
She also has a special food to ensure she doesn’t have a food allergy.
Any ideas would be appreciated. Thank you.
I would recommend to seek veterinary advice.

Hi my vet prescribed this for my dog who has just had a litter of pups,My dog has a ear infection,Will this product harm the puppies. Many Thanks.
Surolan can be used in lactating bitches once puppies are >1 week of age. You should follow your vet's advice closely on this though, if the pups are under 1 week of age and they have explicitly stated this is safe then you should consult them about it. Your vet can provide off license advice.

Is there a cheaper non prescription product that I can use for my dog
There is no over the counter equivalent to this Surolan unfortunately. It contains steroid, antifungal and antibiotic prescription medications within.
I recommend reading our blog 'Itchy Ears' for advice on treating ear problems, ear cleaners can be used to prevent prescription medications being required in some cases.

My dog has been prescribed surolan for an ear infection .
She has epilepsy and meningitis . Her medication is dexamethasone, kepra, Epiphen and Libromide .
Is this safe to use on my pup with her condition and medication ?
There is no reason that Surolan should interact with the medications listed as long as it is used as per the datasheet and your vet's guidance. It is best to run this question past your prescribing vet though to be certain, they will know of the condition they are trying to treat and if this is safe.

The drops need to be used twice a day how long do you need to wait between doses.
This is a prescription only medication so you should run any dosing questions past the vet who has prescribed you it to be safe. Twice daily dosing almost always means once every 12 hours.
Lucy
How long do i use this for?
This is a prescription only medication so you will need to run this question past your prescribing vet. They will have prescribed the product with a specific treatment course in mind.

Why can’t you use the product if it has been open for more than 3 months
The 3 month expiry refers to the shelf life after first opening the immediate packaging, ie opening the bottle. This is because the medicine starts to change when exposed to bacteria and particles in the air. Beyond the 3 month mark the product may not have it's intended effect, or worse have 'gone off' and cause damaging effects.

Do I need a prescription for this as I have a little left from his las ear infection but need more.
This is a prescription only medicine so you will need a written prescription from your vet to purchase this. More information on this can be found below:

Is there an equivalent product to surolan that doesn't require a prescription please
The short answer is no, there is not. Surolan is a mixture of antibiotics and a steroid and all of these are prescription only. You might find that your dog would respond well to daily cleaning with a simple, mildly antiseptic wash, such as Epi-otic. Some dogs do. Others have an underlying allergy which results in persistent or recurrent ear inflammation and secondary microbial overgrowth. An exclusion diet, fed for at least 6 weeks, will sometimes provide a cure for the ear trouble (surprisingly enough). Investigating a possible dietary allergy might well be worth talking to your vet about.
