Owners in Reading should ensure their pet has a reflective collar or jacket, after the city was identified as having the most road accidents involving cats and dogs.

Research by Direct Line has found that the worst places for animal road accidents are Reading, Redhill, London, Guildford and Bristol.

Adam Whiteley, head of Direct Line pet insurance, said that most people view their pets as part of the family so it can be traumatic if a pet is involved in an accident.

"By taking simple steps such as keeping their dog on a lead at all times and buying a reflective collar or jacket it's possible to reduce the likelihood of a pet becoming involved in a road accident," he said.

Mr Whiteley also said that it is important to have the right pet insurance as this can provide peace of mind should there be an accident where the animal needs treatment.

Other areas identified as being dangerous for pets were Glasgow, Edinburgh, Portsmouth, Southend and Hemel Hempstead.
