Tyneside dog owners urged to dress up as cats

People getting set to put their pooch on its dog collar and lead and take part in a charity event have been asked to come dressed up as their four-legged friend's arch enemy - a cat.

A charity dog walk being held to raise money for the Willows Cat Adoption Centre, which cares for homeless and unwanted cats, will see owners walk from Souter Lighthouse to The Sundial pub in Sea Road, The Shields Gazette reports.

Maria Harrison, owner of The Willows, explained: "It's strictly for dogs and their owners.

"Cats can't take part as it would be distressing for them, but we are asking dog owners to come along in fancy dress.

"We thought it was a wonderful idea because it's something which involves people who love both cats and dogs."

She added that hopefully this will raise some "vital funds" for the cat centre.

This event follows a similar charity event, the Great North Dog Walk, which saw over 22,000 dogs and their owners walk the South Shields coastline.
