Pet owners have been urged to provide their animal with cat scratch posts to keep them happy.
Melissa Bonnel, writing for the Pleasanton Patch website, expressed her belief that cats can be kept indoors for the majority of the time and still be content as long as they are provided with enough items to keep them happy.
She wrote on the website: "You may think that cats are not happy indoors. This is also false. As long as you provide your feline companion a lot of toys, a sunny window, a scratching post, and a warm lap, your cat will be happy."
Ms Bonnel added that indoor cats are typically healthier as they are not exposed to a range of diseases and parasites which are prevalent outside, such as ticks, fleas and worms.
A study by the Humane Society of the United States in 1992 found that free roaming cats have an average lifespan of five years, while indoor cats can live up to 20 years or more.
