Pet owners urged to stock up on supplies this winter

Pet owners should ensure they have enough emergency supplies for their animals this winter, it has been claimed.

Yvette Van Veen, a Canadian-based animal behaviour consultant, expressed her belief that consumers should pack a box of emergency supplies which also features items for their pet such as medication and a leash.

She wrote in The Star: "Prepare [emergency] kits for both your home and your vehicle - and keep pets in mind when stocking up.

"You may also want to put a spare leash or cat carrier in the trunk of your car. Keep adequate supplies of your pet's medication on hand."

Ms Van Veen also advised consumers to bring their animals indoors during the winter months as they develop health conditions, as well as boredom, if they are stuck in the same environment for an extended period of time.

Dogs should be kept on a leash at all times when on walks, she added, to ensure they do not run onto frozen rivers.
