Keep your dog on a leash this winter, says vet

Pet owners should keep their dog on a leash this winter to prevent any accidents, according to an expert.

Jenn Savedge, the author of three books on eco-friendly living, has identified a number of health tips to keep animals in good condition during the cold weather.

One particular danger for dog owners is the presence of frozen lakes in many parks, with dogs.

She told the Miami Herald: "Keep 'em leashed. Animals can easily lose their scent in winter months, especially when snow covers the ground.

"So keep your dog on a leash when you're in an unfamiliar area. Also, make sure his ID tags are up to date as more pets are lost during the winter than during any other season."

Ms Savedge added that consumers should ensure the water in their pet's bowl does not freeze over during the winter months and regularly top it up if necessary.
