Charity offers advice on holidaying with pets

While summer is a fantastic time to spend more time with your pet, it is important they are kept safe if being taken away - in the UK or abroad.

Battersea Dogs & Cats Home has offered some advice on travelling with pets, such as taking their favourite pet toys, blankets and beds so they have familiar smells with them.

Carlton Spears, an Operations Manager at Battersea, said: "The summer holidays often bring with them a disruption to the usual routine for you and your pet.

"It is a perfect time of year to spend some quality time with your four-legged friend, but it is crucial to make sure they stay safe."

Tips include making sure your pet is microchipped and details are up-to-date, take enough pet medication if your animal requires it  and take a harness to keep your dog safe and secure when walking somewhere unknown.

If you are travelling abroad, it is important to ensure all your pet's vaccinations are up-to-date, as this is one of the government's PETS travel scheme requirements.
