Spaniel pup gets a new lease of life

Walkies are back on the agenda for Stanley the cocker spaniel after he became the youngest dog in Britain to undergo a full hip replacement.

The young pup had the operation at just five months old after being born with a rare degenerative condition called Legg-Calve-Perthes disease, which left him unable to walk and in constant agony.

This type of procedure is not usually carried out on dogs as young as Stanley but vets at the Maypole Veterinary Clinic in Birmingham decided to go ahead with the operation after seeing how much pain the spaniel was in.

Stanley is now recovering at the Hollytrees Animal Rescue Trust in Hollywood, where workers say he is full of beans and looking forward to finding a new home.

Arthritis in dogs can strike at any time, which is why it's always important to keep an eye on your pets for any changes in behaviour or movement.
