Pet lovers also reported that their dogs and cats enjoy listening to music during journeys, with Adele, Lady Gaga and Madonna cited as the most popular artists enjoyed by animals.

Radio One was chosen by respondents as the top choice for in-car pet entertainment, followed closely by Radio Two and Five Live.'s Gareth Kloet said: "Road trips should be as fun for our pets as they can be for us, and keeping our pets happy in the back is also going to reduce distraction for us as drivers, making our journeys safer for us and our animals."

Animal owners embarking on road trips were urged not to allow their pets to stick their head out of the window, as this could result in animals getting hurt.
