Vets will be able to offer advice on insurance, expert says

Wednesday, 6th June 2012

A vet should be able to give owners advice on what insurance policy to take out, so that if they end up needing pet medication on an ongoing basis, they will be covered.

That is according to Sarah Linehan, dog trainer and pet behaviourist at The Pet Experience.

Ms Linehan said that vets will have a number of different insurer names to give owners.

In terms of what else to consider when taking out a pet insurance policy, she said it is very important that people read the small print on policies.

"A lot of insurance companies will give you a specific amount a year. So for example you might get £5,000 a year," she said.

"But what that means is if your dog or cat ends up with an ongoing condition like diabetes [and] they have to have insulin all the time, that might not actually be enough."

Ms Linehan has worked with dogs for over 15 years and provides training for dogs at all levels of obedience.
