Roly Owers, World Horse Welfare chief executive, has revealed that many people are unaware of how much owning a horse will end up costing them.
He said: "In our experience a significant number of people take on a horse without realising how much responsibility is involved.
"For example we had one new owner who had no idea that they would incur farrier's bills on a regular basis."
The World Horse Welfare is a charity that is dedicated to giving abused and neglected horses a second chance in life.
Julie Girling, MEP for the South West and Gibraltar, is set to visit one of the World Horse Welfare's Recovery and Rehabilitation Centres.
She is set to get involved with the charity's campaign to end the long-distance transportation of horses across Europe to slaughter. She will visit the centre to discuss recent progress of the campaign.
