Emmerdale star risks life to save Jack Russell

A Jack Russell owned by former Emmerdale star James Thornton was lucky not to need pet medication after jumping into the River Aire.

To rescue the dog, Daisy, from drowning, Thornton jumped into the river after it. Unlike Daisy, the actor needed treatment for mouth ulcers and damaged his cornea by river branches during the ordeal.

His wife, Gavin and Stacey star Joanna Page, was there at the time. She told the Daily Mirror: "I honestly thought he was going to die. It could have been an episode from Emmerdale. James ripped his trainers off and did a full-on dive into the water.

"Luckily he caught Daisy but couldn't swim against the current. They were both swept away. I was running along the top of the river, screaming."

Thornton said he wasn't scared at first but was worried after hitting the water. The duo were swept down the river until they managed to clamber onto some banking.

Page and Thornton married in 2003.
