Dog’s life saved by emergency operation

Thursday, 24th May 2012

A Shih Tzu is lucky to be alive after vets discovered her liver lobes had twisted, meaning blood was not draining from  her liver.

Bella’s owner, Eliza Lawton, had noticed her pet was not her normal playful self and had gone off her dog food.

After taking her to the PDSA PetAid hospital in Stoke-on-Trent, Bella's condition deteriorated but there were no clear signs about what was wrong with her.

Vet Laura Fitzjohn said: "We found that two of Bella’s liver lobes had twisted around on themselves, preventing the blood from draining from the liver.

"Both of the lobes had ruptured and were bleeding. If Bella hadn’t had this corrected by us, the condition would almost certainly have lead to her death."

Ms Lawton said that Bella is now back to her normal self and is happy playing with her pet toys.

Having twisted liver lobes is not a common condition. Luckily the liver is able to regenerate itself.
