Blind Terrier steals the show at Battersea Open Day

A Jack Russell Terrier left blind as a result of severe Glaucoma stole the show at Battersea Dogs & Cats Home's Open Day in Old Windsor at the weekend (June 30th).

Poppy and her owner Sam Jones won first prize in the fancy dress contest and the Best Battersea Dog categories.

Ms Jones rehomed Poppy five years ago. The dog had to have both her eyes removed after vets decided pet meds could not help treat her condition.

Poppy's owner dressed as a circus ringmaster, with the 13-year-old dog in an elephant costume. Ms Jones said: "Despite her blindness, she is such a brave little dog. She's very independent and lives a full and happy life with me.

"I don't see her as any different to other dogs really and she’s very special to me, she's an amazing girl. The work that Battersea does to help dogs like Poppy is just wonderful."

Over 2,500 people attended the event and took part in a number of competitions, including Prettiest Lady, Waggiest Tail and the Dog Who Looks Most Like Their Owner, which was judged by celebrity broadcaster Paul Ross.
