Hero dogs to be celebrated at Crufts

Six heroic dogs have been shortlisted for the 2013 Kennel Club Friends For Life competition, with the winner to be decided by a public vote and announced on the final night of the famous four-day dog show, Crufts, at the Birmingham NEC on March 10th.

The award, which was launched in 2006, celebrates dogs who have displayed exceptional bravery, companionship and loyalty toward their owners, with several police and military hounds up for the prize this year.

Among the contenders is Brin, a local Afghan mixed breed known as a Koochee Tiger, who was adopted by the British armed forces after being found in the street, before going on to excel as a bomb-disposal expert.

Brin is said to have saved the lives of a number of soldiers by alerting them to unexploded devices, and now tours the UK with his owner, Sally Baldwin, raising money for the Nowzad Dogs Charity in Afghanistan.
