Wirral dog named runner up in pet slimming contest

Thursday, 7th July 2011

By sticking to a strict diet of dog food, a podgy pooch from Wirral has been named the runner up in the PDSA's annual slimming competition, Pet Fit Club.

Maddison, an eight-year-old Rottweiler, weighed a whopping 52.2kg - 24 per cent more than she should be.

Bobbie Rhys-Chadwick adopted Maddison after seeing him struggle to walk around because of his weight in a local animal rescue centre.

Now weighing just 41.25kg, Maddison's diet has meant she is this year's second best pet slimmer.

Mr Rhys-Chadwick said: "I'm so thrilled at the change in Maddison. Pet Fit Club has given her a new lease of life and now that she has lost weight she’s like a different dog! She’s much more energetic and loves going walkies with our other dogs.

"She looks so different that friends and family we haven't seen in a while barely recognise her."

According to PDSA statistics, 50 per cent of pets in the UK will be obese by 2013.
