Shrewsbury pup rescued from rabbit hole

A Shrewsbury pup may well have been pleased to have some dog food after being stuck down a rabbit hole for hours.

Cookie, a three-year-old Pattersdale Terrier, became trapped five ft underground after chasing a rabbit down a hole into a labyrinth of tunnels that covered around 20 sq ft.

Kay Barnes, who owns Cookie, tried to get her pooch out of the hole for two hours before contacting the emergency services.

The rescue team eventually managed to rescue the pup late in the afternoon by digging a trench.

A spokesperson for the Shropshire Fire and Rescue service explained that the team used specialist listening equipment to find out where Cookie was.

The technology used is usually meant for operations where buildings have collapsed.

Ms Barnes said: "I'm absolutely delighted to have Cookie back. We set off for the walk early in the morning but we didn't end up getting back until around 5pm.

"There must have been around ten fire fighters there and they worked for hours to get her free."
