A Staffordshire Bull Terrier is being fed dog food and taken care of after its violent shoplifter owner abandoned it at the scene of the crime.
The assailant attacked and racially abused the shopkeeper when staff tried to stop him from stealing beer and cigarettes on October 24th, reports the St Helens Star.
He tried to take the dog with him but a bystander intervened and the shoplifter left without the animal.
Steve Lowe, Newton-le-Willows neighbourhood inspector, said: "The offender was confronted by the shopkeeper's wife and after punching her in the face, ran off.
"Fortunately for us he left his dog at the shop so we are appealing for anyone who recognises it and knows who its owner is or where he lives to contact the police so we can investigate these serious offences."
St Helens Council will normally keep stray dogs for seven days, after which time it will, if possible, be rehomed.
