Manchester pooch up for hero award

A pooch from Manchester may receive some extra special dog food if he is awarded the Dog's Trust hero award.

Echo, a seven-year-old Labrador, is being nominated for the 2011 Hero Dog Award after searching for lost people after the earthquake in Haiti took place last year, reports the BBC.

Mike Dewar, canine team manager for the Greater Manchester Fire Service, who took Echo over to the devastated country, explained that the dog "really struggled" in the heat and from being surrounded by broken glass and twisted metal.

He told the news provider: "The dogs in the UK fire service are the unsung heroes really and it's nice to get some recognition for the hard work the handlers and the dogs put in.

"What we've got to remember is that we're asking the dogs to go to places where we don't want to because the buildings are unsafe, they may collapse at any minute."

Other categories involved in the Dogs Trust Honours 2011 include the Celebrity Canine Award Dogged Devotion Award and the Golden Oldie Award.
