A four-month-old Lurcher puppy was discovered outside a Blue Cross rehoming centre with a "heartbreaking note" from the person who abandoned her.
The dog, who is called Gypsy, was abandoned outside the Tiverton rehoming centre with dog food, water and pet toys.
A note was found with the animal that said: "I'm so sorry for this, her name is Gypsy, 16 weeks old. Wormed and flead, all her jabs. I love you. Gypsy, I’m sorry. Please don’t put her down."
Sarah Bussell, centre manager at the charity, said if people are struggling to care for their animals, that they should not abandon them but instead contact a charity that can offer help and advice.
She added that the Blue Cross would never judge anyone "making the responsible decision to give up an animal".
Luckily, Gypsy did not have to wait long to find a new family and has already been taken home with new owners.
